WATERBURY, VT – The 26th running of the CARQUEST Vermont Governor’s Cup 150 is expected to be viewed by the biggest crowd of the 2009 season and quite possibly the largest crowd in Thunder Road International Speedbowl history. Advanced tickets are currently on sale for the event featuring NASCAR Sprint Cup Star Tony Stewart. There are still plenty of tickets still available.
To accommodate the expected crowd, the parking lot at “The Nation’s Site of Excitement” has been expanded. The main parking lot has been extended into the gravel pit area nearly doubling the main parking lot capacity. This additional parking was part of the numerous renovations which took place prior to the Memorial Day weekend event. A path from this parking lot area has also been added to create easy access for fans headed for the front gate. There will also be a “satellite” ticket booth to accommodate the spectators headed for Forsythe Hill in turn 3.
It has recently been announced that the Vermont Governor’s Cup 150 will be a point-counting event for the weekly Thunder Road Late Model division. Over thirty competitors will attempt to end the Governor’s Cup domination of Eric Williams and Cris Michaud. 2008 “King of the Road” Williams has scored two wins and a second in the past three Governor’s Cup events, while three-time track champion Michaud has one win and two seconds in the past three runnings of the event.
Other expected entries include 2009 Mekkelsen RV Memorial Day Classic winner Dave Pembroke, seven-time ACT Tour champion Jean-Paul Cyr, 2008 ACT Tour Rookie of the Year Nick Sweet and three-time track champion Senator Phil Scott, among others. The Governor’s Cup is an ACT Invitational Qualifier so non-regulars looking for a shot at competing at New Hampshire Motor Speedway are also expected.
The celebration of the 50th Anniversary Season will continue with regular Thursday night competition beginning on June 11th with Ferguson Waterworks Night and the annual appearance of the New England Antique Racers (NEAR. The second Thursday night event will be Harvest Equipment Night on June 18th with Bobby Allison in attendance to join the celebration. Both post times are set for 6:30 pm, while the CARQUEST Governor’s Cup post time will be 6 pm.
