Special 75-lap Late Model Feature on Final Thursday

Barre, VT – This Thursday, August 26 will be the final Thursday Night event on the 2010 Thunder Road International Speedbowl schedule and the deciding event in the Late Model “King of the Road” battle. Three Late Model drivers have separated themselves from the field and will tackle the Barre highbanks one last time in a special 75 lap Late Model feature presented by Aubuchon Hardware to conclude the 2010 championship hunt.

Current point leader Dave Pembroke of Montpelier has held the points lead since the third event of the season but has never seen his lead grow to more than 22 points. The 2007 Thunder Road track champion now has a 2 point lead going into the final race for the championship.

Pembroke’s closest competitor for the majority of the season has been Barre’s Nick Sweet. The hometown favorite claimed a big win in the Carquest Governor’s Cup in June. Sweet has also finished inside the top ten in all 14 point awarding events, and has been within eight points of the lead for the past six weeks. After his sixth place effort in last Thursday’s ACE Hardware night he is just two points behind Pembroke. It would be Sweet’s first “King of the Road” crown in just his third year of Late Model competition.

Sitting in third place just 8 points behind Pembroke is Senator, and current Lieutenant Governor Candidate, Phil Scott of Montpelier. Scott has rebounded from a last place finish in the Memorial Day Classic to bring himself back in the championship picture. Scott bounced back from his Memorial Day woes with a win in the very next event on Ferguson Waterworks Night. That win started his steady comeback from 56 points behind in the standings to within just eight before mid-season.

After a rough Times Argus Mid-Season Championship outing which put him back to 40 points out of the lead, he has once again pulled himself back within striking range with steady gains each week. Scott has the most top five finishes with 10 in the 14 events to date, including five straight since mid-season. He will attempt to earn his fourth Thunder Road Late Model Championship on Thursday night.

The 2010 Thunder Road Late Model “King of the Road” will be decided this Thursday, August 26 on Aubuchon Hardware Night in a special 75 lap event. The Bond Auto Tiger Sportsmen, Allen Lumber Street Stocks and Junkyard Warriors will run regular events. Admission is just $10 for adults, $3 for kids (ages 6 to 12) and $20 for a family ticket (2 adults and 2 kids). Post time is 6:30pm.
