RELAY RACE: Cars on Display in South Portland

SOUTH PORTLAND, Maine – Several area stock car drivers and their race cars will join “Betty’s Keepers” in support of the American Cancer Society at the South Portland Friendly’s Restaurant on Monday, April 4, from 5-8 p.m.

Race fans are invited to join the team at Friendly’s for a night of motorsports, food and ice cream. A portion of the night’s proceeds from the restaurant on 210 Maine Mall Road will be donated to the “Relay For Life” event at South Portland High School June 17-18.

Three-time Oxford 250 winner and the winningest driver in the history of Oxford Plains Speedway, Mike Rowe, will have his Super Late Model on display and sign autographs for fans at the event. Rowe, who won the 2009 Beech Ridge Motor Speedway track championship under the NASCAR Whelen All-American Series banner, joins a host of Beech Ridge staff at the event.

Rowe is also a multi-time winner of the PASS 300 at Beech Ridge.

Beech Ridge Motor Speedway drivers Nicole Timmons and Laura McKeage will be on hand with their race cars as well, as will Maine Modified Series rookie Cameron Lovejoy.

“Everybody’s lives are touched by this disease in some way,” said event organizer Nate Egan. “I just figured bringing the racing community together to help out with this was a no-brainer. We had such a great show of support at the Racin’ Preview show in February, that we’re hoping people will support this, too.”

Tickets will also be available for the upcoming Portland appearance of Adam Ezra Group, a Boston-based acoustic rock band. Tickets are $15 for the April 28th show at The Gold Room, and a silent auction and 50/50 raffle will be held in conjunction with “Concerts For A Cause.” All proceeds will be donated to Relay For Life.

Relay For Life began in 1986, and today there are more than 4,800 events held across the country to help honor, inspire, remember and celebrate the people who are currently battling or have battled cancer in the past.
