Fifteen Different Winners in 2012 Season
Barre, VT –Championship hopes caught traction last Thursday night at Barre’s Thunder Road, but not just for a select few. Fifteen different drivers have already celebrated feature wins in 2012 with no repeat winners in any of Thunder Road’s three premiere divisions, and it leaves titles across all divisions ripe for the picking.
Thunder Road Co-Owner and NASCAR Hall of Famer Ken Squier is blown away. “I have been to short tracks all over the country, and I’m not sure I’ve ever heard a stat like that,” exclaimed Squier. “Fifteen different winners in five events? That’s really something,” he finished.
Bond Auto Tiger point leader Bobby Therrien entered last Thursday’s event with the largest lead across the three divisions at Thunder Road, but left without it after an altercation with the front stretch wall. Craftsbury’s Mike Martin capitalized on his way to a 7th place finish, laying claim to the overall points lead by a mere three points over 2012 feature winner Josh Demers. Therrien fell to third, four points out of the lead, and former Tiger Champion Shawn Fleury is just seven points back in fourth.
Barre’s Nick Sweet held on to the overall point lead in the Late Model division over Vermont Lt. Governor Phil Scott, but “Hurricane” Jamie Fisher leapt into third place after a gutsy runner-up performance last Thursday. John Donahue has recovered from a sluggish start in 2012 to jump into fourth, and Mike Bailey rounds out the top five.
Allen Lumber Street Stock point leader Nick Pilotte dealt with major adversity last Thursday, managing a ninth place finish despite starting on the tail end of the field with mechanical issues. Pilotte continues to lead Lincoln’s Garry Bashaw, and Hardwick’s Bunker Hodgdon. Rookie of the Year contender Dean Switser Jr., pulled into fourth after a breakthrough victory last Thursday, and all-time win list leader Tommy Smith rides fifth overall.
Championship battles are just getting started as Thunder Road competitors prepare for weekly racing this Thursday, June 28 sponsored by Fairpoint Communications. Post time is 6:30pm. There will also be a special kids poster contest at intermission. Adult admission is $10, kids 6-12 are $3, family passes are $20 and children under 6 get in free.
