Lee, NH – With two chances to add to his 2012 win total at Lee USA Speedway Friday night, defending NASCAR Whelen All-American Series Small Block Super Modified champion Wayne Helliwell, Jr. came up empty, scoring a DNF in the first half of the Benson Lumber and Hardware doubleheader and missing the second race completely.
This left the door to victory lane wide open, with 2010 champion Tommy Tombarello, Jr. picking up the win in the first of two 25-lap feature events, with Leslie Keyser, Ryan Gath, Mike Netishen, P.J. Stergios, Tony Carroll, Mike Spurling, Sparky MacIver, and Mike Ordway, Jr. the rest of the top ten.
Ordway bounced back strong in the second 25-lapper, picking up his second win of the year when the checkers flew. Another impressive run brought Tombarello to second, followed by Gath, Carroll, Matt Riley, Stergios, Spurling, Keyser, Jason Phillips, and Ricky Wolf.
The Prime Storage Late Model Sportsmen competed in their biggest race of the year, with a mandatory pit stop included in the 100-lap grind to make things even more interesting. Former champ Grant Aither made another of his infrequent appearances, but he showed he can still get the job done.
Aither and veteran J.R. Baril pretty much owned the race, battling side by side for several laps contesting the top spot. The pair swapped spots a couple of times, but the final pass was made by Aither with the laps running out, and he held on to post the big win.
Baril took second in the Brian House entry, followed by 2011 champ Ryan Green, Tony Kawejsza, Jimmy Russell, Sam Gooden, Timmy Johnson, Michele Fushpanski, Kyle Roy, Kayla Cazares, Patrick Stewart, David Piper, Chris Titcomb, Ray Dinsmore, and Jason Welch.
Ron Washburn was king of the hill in the David’s Race Cars and Components Hobby Stock main event, running from the outside pole to the lead at the drop of the green, and never looking back. Washburn went the distance to post the win over Kenny “Caveman” Scott.
Scott’s best run of the year left Patrick Tanguay in the third spot, with Mike Williams right on his back bumper in fourth. Fifth position went to Jim Piaseczny, with Jim Shorey taking home sixth after borrowing the Sam Peabody machine for the night.
Returning to action after several weeks off due to work commitments, Brian Thompson finished seventh in the Dennis Soares entry, with Niko Maniatis, Kyle Sawyer, and David MacDonald rounding out the top ten.
American Used Auto Parts Ironman action saw rookie driver Ryan Pitkin capture the first checkered flag of his young career, holding off a late-race challenge from Danielle Simoneau to make the trip to Lee’s victory lane. Simoneau, Evan Horvath, Jake Rheaume, Shane Horvath, Tyler Mitchell, Hannah Shaw, and Chris Murray were next in the final rundown.
The mighty Midgets return to the high banks for what is always a wild night of racing
