Competition Ready for WDEV/WLVB/Calkins Event
Barre, VT – Championship point races at Barre’s Thunder Road remain tight as competitors prepare for a special event at WDEV//WLVB/Calkins night this Thursday, (August 2). The race will feature the famous Porta-Potty Grand Prix at intermission, where point leaders from mid-season will engage in an all-out drag race with porta-potties down the front stretch of Thunder Road.
Midseason point-leaders Nick Sweet, Jason Allen, Nick Pilotte, and their respective race teams, will face off in the annual Porta-Potty Grand Prix on Thursday. Sweet, the lone veteran of the race, feels great about his chances. “I think we have a great shot at winning it, if my boys don’t get pooped,” he laughed.
Late Model point leader Sweet remained on top of the list even after second place point-man and defending Champion Dave Pembroke stole third in a razor close finish last Sunday night. Pembroke sits 80 points out of the top spot, with a tie between three-time Champion Phil Scott and young Cody Blake trailing him. With only four point races remaining, every lap counts in the chase to become the 53rd “King of the Road.”
Two-time Champion Shawn Fleury has surged to the point lead after a crucial win on double points night and a charge to fourth in the Bond Auto Tiger Heritage 100-lap Special last Thursday. Craftsbury Common’s Mike Martin remains in the hunt, a mere two points behind, and top talent Jason Allen fell to just seven points out of the lead. Wolcott’s Brendan Moodie Jr., and Milton’s Eric Badore sit deadlocked in fourth, just 13 points off the pace set by Fleury. Only fifteen points separate the top six drivers in the division, and critical points are on the line as the season heads into August.
Jefferson, NH’s Nick Pilotte extends his lead over rookie sensation Dean Switser Jr. in the Allen Lumber Street Stocks with a big third-place finish in last Sunday night’s rainout event, increasing his lead to 21 points. Sophomore driver Cameron Ouellette remains tough in third, while Lincoln’s Garry Bashaw and Morrisville’s “Wild” Willy Hennequin give chase from fourth and fifth respectively.
Point battles continue to tighten as the summer heads to the homestretch for WDEV/WLVB/Calkins night on Thursday, August 2. Post time is 6:30pm. Adult admission is $10, kids 6-12 are $3, a family pass for four is $20, and children under six get in free.
