The dismal skies and occasional rain on Saturday forced Speedway 95 officials to cancel the racing program scheduled for Saturday night. Owner Del Merritt said the 50 lap Gardner Construction Enterprises series race for the Sportsman cars will be run Saturday night August 18 along with the 35 lap Strictly Street Pepsi Beverage Company series race scheduled for that night. Merritt also announced that the racing season will be extended two weeks to compensate for the two race dates rained out this season. Racing will be scheduled for Saturday September 29 and Saturday, October 6, with a 5 p.m. start time for both nights. Merritt added that the regular points races would end on September 22 as scheduled, and most likely some special events will be scheduled for the added dates.
Although the dismal skies continued into Sunday, the 1st Annual Speedway 95 Car Show went on as planned, with over 25 classic, hot-rod and race cars on display. Prizes were awarded to the following, based on judging by track officials:
Best of 50’s: Robert Wren 1955 Ford Crown Victoria
Best of 60’s: David Finely 1969 Camaro Convertible
Best of 70’s: Skip McIntosh 1971 Datsun 240-Z
Best of 80’s: Tim Osnoe, 1988 Pontiac Firebird Formula
Best of 90’s : Alan Cookson 1990 Dodge 4X4
Best of 2000’s: Skip McIntosh 2007 Saturn Sky Turbo
Best Special Interest: Wendell Wells 1964 Ford Galaxie 500
People’s Choice: Julie Cookson 1980 Ford Mustang
