Scarborough, ME – Saturday’s NASCAR Nite at Beech Ridge Motor Speedway hosted two main events: the Pro Series 40-lap event and the Sport Series 100-lap main event. Scarborough’s Kelly Moore and Windham’s Ben Tinker were the nights marquee race winners, respectively.
At the drop of the green in the Pro Series feature, Mike Maietta Jr of South Portland, battled Lyman’s Alan Tardiff for the lead. Tardiff gained a slight advantage over Maietta on lap two going into turn three and captured the lead. Tardiff opened a 10-car length lead until a caution on lap 24 bunched the field back together. Before the restart, Tardiff chose the outside lane of the front row, putting second-year driver Bobby Timmons, III, of Windham on the inside. Timmons had meneuvered into the second spot following a crash that sent Maietta pitside.
On the restart, Tardiff gained a slight advantage over Timmons, however Timmons battled back and raced alongside Tardiff until the second caution flew on lap 31. Following the second caution, Kelly Moore of Scarborough and Don Colpritt, Jr., of Scarborough, joined the battle for the lead. After six unpredictable laps, the third and final caution flew at lap 37. Hard chargers Moore and Colpritt moved up into 2nd and 3rd, while Timmons fell back into 4th.
The final restart proved critical as Moore battled side-by-side with Tardiff for the final three laps of the 40-lap race. Tardiff moved up going into turn one on the final lap, giving Moore just enough space to take the lead and sprint for the finish line. It was Moore’s first win of the 2013 NASCAR Nite season in only his third attempt. Tardiff finished 2nd, Timmons 3rd, Colpritt 4th and Larry Gelians rounded out the top five in his first Ridge appearance this season.
Ben Tinker of New Gloucester led the final 30 of 100 laps in the Budweiser Sport Series feature event. Tinker and mahority race leader Frank Wear of Buxton, made slight contact going into turn one on lap 70, giving Tinker the lead.
Tinker is only the third driver to repeat a win in the extra-distance race; he is also the first repeat NASCAR Nite driver this season, now having won two out of three attempts.
