Scarborough, ME – Saturday’s NASCAR Nite Pro Series 100-lap feature event was won by D.J. Shaw, of Center Conway, NH.
Veteran racer Kelly Moore, of Scarborough, led the field to the green flag, but was overtaken by 21-year old Dave Farrington of Jay, the following lap. Farrington led until the first caution flew on lap 26 and regrouped the field back together. On the restart, Farrington and Moore battled side-by-side for three laps until Moore was able to move into the top spot on lap 28.
Moore lead until a second caution on lap 35 that involved previous race leader Farrington; mechanical rear-end damage to his car sent him to the pits and unable to return to action.
By the caution, Mike Rowe, of Turner, had successfully maneuvered his way into second place from his sixth starting position. An all-champion front row made up of Moore and Rowe led the field to the green on the second restart, Rowe gained a car-length advantage going into turn one to claim the led. Rowe led the remaining 13 laps until the halfway mark when the third caution flew.
Hard chargers D.J Shaw, of Center Conway, NH and Bill Rodgers, of Old Orchard Beach, were able to safely work their way into the top five by the third caution. Rowe maintained the lead on the restart and led until lap 97, when he was caught in a late-race incident resulting in the final caution. The incident, involving a spinning lapped car, collected Rowe and damaged his right-front wheel and sidelined him, setting the stage for a father-son shootout between the Shaws. Rowe had commanded the race for previous 60 laps and looked like the race’s certain winner.
The younger Shaw took control of the race lead, keeping his father at bay for the final three laps of the event. For Shaw, it was his first win since July, 2011. It was the first 2013 appearance for both Shaws, who were visiting Beech Ridge on a night off from their regular Pro All Star Series touring schedule.
Lewis Anderson, of Buxton, led the final lap in the Wildcat extended 50-lap feature event. A caution on lap 48 set up a green-white-checkered finish, and set up a mad scramble between the top four drivers. Anderson took the lead from majority race leader Justin Karkos, of Limington, in the race’s only caution period.
