WISCASSET SPEEDWAY PRESS RELEASE MAY 16, 2015
DYER SPEEDS HER WAY TO FIRST NAPA SUPER STREET WIN
Last Saturday was Mainely Motorsports night at Wiscasset Speedway. Mainely Motorsports host, Steve Perry, was on hand. Perry was greeting fans as they arrived, passing out t-shirts and goodie bags filled with items. Perry also gave away kids bikes to ten lucky children who participated in the Wiscasset Speedway Kid’s Club. The Kid’s Club is a weekly feature at Wiscasset Speedway.
Perry said, “This is our third year of having a Mainely Motorsports night here at Wiscasset Speedway, and I really enjoy it. I try to get more involved with the crowd and the drivers. I bring some extra contingency awards and give a bunch of things away to the fans, to bring more fans to the facility. Through my travels with Mainely Motorsports I have met a lot of great people, and I encourage people to come and support Wiscasset Speedway and watch five great divisions of racing.”
On the agenda were the Group One divisions of racing, including Prostock, Napa Super Street, Thunder 4’s, and New England Four Cylinder Prostock. Also at the track this week was the National Qualifier for the Amsoil Nelcar Legends.
The first crowd pleaser was a thirty-five lap New England Four Cylinder Prostock feature. Starting at the pole was the #5 of Cody Billings. Behind him were the #55 of John Shorey and Cameron Folsom of the #99. When green flag racing began, there was a mad rush for the front, and before the conclusion of lap one, the #98 of Kamren Knowles had advanced to second place. There was a caution during lap two, and on the ensuing restart, Knowles got a jump on the outside and took the lead. Following him was the #24 of Jeff Prindall, who took second. Billings dropped to third.
Lap eleven saw Prindall take the lead briefly from Knowles, but Knowles and Prindall parted to travel around lap traffic, and Knowles emerged as track leader once again. Knowles held off Prindall through lap twenty-five, when Prindall spun while attempting a pass on the outside. Prindall recovered from the spin, but slipped to the back. The #27 of Jacob Hendsbee moved to second, and the #8 of Craig Dunn advanced to third.
Knowles kept his lead for the remainder of the race and took his second NE4CP win of the season. Hendsbee placed second. Dunn took third.
Post-race Knowles said, “It was a good race, coming from the back. I want to thank all the fans for coming out to support me. I want to thank my mom, dad, Chad Moody, Harry “Pork” Moody, and my sponsor A C Towing.”
A caution free twenty-five lap Napa Super Street feature was action packed. Tasha Dyer of the #32 wrecked when last on the track. As a result of the wreck, Dyer sprained an ankle, and was still on crutches for the race. Despite her sprain, Dyer raced her way to the front of the heat and started at the pole. Behind her were the #88 of Jamie Norton and Jason Curtis of the #02. Before a half lap was complete, Josh Bailey of the #2 had advanced to third. The #1 of Adam Chadbourne was behind him, and the pair battled for the number three spot.
Chadbourne took second when he passed Curtis during lap eight. Bailey passed Curtis and took third. Lap nineteen saw Dyer getting loose, and Chadbourne and Bailey shortened the gap separating the race leaders. Chadbourne and Bailey raced door to door, each looking for second, but Chadbourne was able to advance and hold of Bailey to clinch second place. Dyer took her first Napa Super Street win. Bailey rounded out the top three in third.
In an interview after the race, Dyer said, “Tonight’s win was awesome. It was redemption. We had a rough start to the season, and this made up for it. It made all the hard work and the frustration worth it. Once I got halfway into my run, the car seemed really good. About five laps to go, the car started getting looser. I started losing my gap. I was worried about the #1 car and the #2 car. I stayed smooth, but they were starting to close in. When two to go came, I knew I pretty much had it wrapped up if I stayed smooth. Five more laps though, and I think the #1 car and the #2 car would have ran me over.”
“I want to thank James Osmond,” said Dyer, “He has pretty much been doing all the work to this car. It’s basically been his from day one to get it right. Ryan Barnes, he’s been working in the shop forty hours per week, if not for him, we wouldn’t be here at all. My grandfather puts up with all this. He lets us take his business over and use the garage whenever we need it. He’s a big driving force in my career. I want to thank all my sponsors: C & S Flooring, Carleton Electric, Dirigo Custom Structures, TC Collision, Brunswick Auto Recycling, Discount Auto and Towing, K2 Racing, and Galuza Carpentry.”
A fifty lap Amsoil Nelcar Legends National Qualifier race was next on the schedule. Seventeen legends cars took to the track in a race to the finish. Starting at the pole was the #70 of Tylar Braunschweig. Behind him was the #19 of Kevin Girard Jr and Cory Hall of the #08. The #84 of Matt Grant passed Hall on the outside of turn one during lap one to take third. The duo raced for second, but Grant was able to hold onto it.
Girard passed Braunschweig on the inside of turn four during lap eight and took the lead. Grant passed Braunschweig during lap nine to take second. There was a red flag during lap twenty-three when the #88 of Pete Cannell went off the turn four corner. When racing action resumed, Braunschweig advanced to second, and Hall and Grant raced door to door for third, with Grant ultimately securing the spot.
Lap thirty-two saw Grant pass Braunschweig for second on the inside of turn two, heading onto the back stretch. The following lap, the #88X of Nicholas Naugle passed Braunschweig for third. Racing order remained constant until the conclusion, with Girard taking his second win at Wiscasset this season. Grant took second. Naugle placed third.
In Victory Lane Grant said, “There was no reeling him (Girard) in.”
Girard said of his win, “It was kind of funny, because we had the win two weeks ago, but my crew chief decided on a whole new set up.” The change worked for Girard and he thanked his sponsors Mainely Plumbing and Heating and Phil’s Automotive.
A quick but exciting twenty lap Thunder 4 feature was next. Starting at the pole was Michael Harrison of the #48. The #26 of Michael Golding was behind him, as was the #58 of David Greenleaf. Off the start, the #28X of David Stone Jr advanced to second. The #05 of Girard Cote advanced to third. However, Cote slowed and seemed to experience mechanical issues and went to the pits.
There was a caution during lap eight when the #31 of Leandra Martin, running in third, spun on the track. Martin caught the #5 of Ryan Chadwick. Both lost forward momentum, causing a caution. Both went to the back of the pack on the ensuing restart, and the #113 of Cody Tribett advanced to third. However, on the restart Stone and Tribett made contact on the back stretch. Stone went into the back stretch wall, and Tribett headed to the pits. Tribett was able to make it back onto the track before caution end. The #04 of Curtis Anderson moved to second and Greenleaf advanced to third.
When racing action resumed on the track, Chadwick went underneath the pack on the backstretch during lap eight and clinched third place. Lap twelve saw Chadwick take the inside line under Anderson on the back stretch and snag second place.
During lap sixteen, Chadwick caught the race leader and headed to the outside of Harrison in a battle for the lead. Proving himself to be a force on the track, Chadwick overtook Harrison during lap eighteen, and coming out of turn two he was ahead by a nose. Chadwick then sped ahead to secure the lead and the win. This was Chadwick’s third Thunder 4 win of the season at Wiscasset Speedway. Harrison placed second. This was Harrison’s career best finish. Anderson took third.
Chadwick said, “I had to use patience coming back from the rear. Trying to make my way up through without getting tangled up in anything. All the way through everyone was clean and decent. The beginning was a little rough. I want to thank Henny Automotive, Hammond Mechanical, D & S Excavation, and K & A Property Services. I want to also thank the Chuck, Josh, Nick, Joey, and Josh for helping me after the race with taking my engine apart for tech.”
Keeping fans on the edge of their seats was an action packed forty lap Prostock event. Starting on the pole was the #77 of Maggie Ferland. Behind her were the #5 of Joe Morey and Kevin Morse of the #29. When green flag racing began, Morey spun on the track in hit the front stretch wall, bringing out a caution. Morey headed down pit row. Morse advanced to second and the #96 of Wyatt Alexander moved to third.
Alexander passed Morse on the inside during lap one, taking second. Coming up from his sixth place start was the #15 of Nick Hinkley. Hinkley passed Morse for third during lap two.
A determined Alexander moved up the track to challenge Ferland for the lead and passed her on the outside during lap three. Ferland then raced door to door with Hinkley for second place. Hinkley was able to get ahead of Ferland during lap five to take second.
Starting in eighth was the #1 of Jeff Burgess. Burgess had worked his way up through the pack, and was challenging Ferland for third during lap six. Burgess secured third and looked outside to pass Hinkley during lap eight. Burgess patiently reeled Hinkley in, and edged ahead on the backstretch during lap thirteen for second. During lap fifteen, Burgess moved to the outside and raced door to door with Alexander for the lead. When coming across the start/finish line, Burgess was ahead of Alexander by one one-thousandths of a second. Burgess continued to press ahead and completed the pass.
The #01 of Andy Saunders had woven through lap traffic from his seventh place start. He challenged Hinkley for third, and passed him on the outside of turn three during lap twenty-two.
There was a caution during lap twenty-eight, bringing all the race leaders together. On the restart, Saunders doesn’t give Alexander an opening, and secured second. Alexander fell into line in third. Burgess took his third consecutive Prostock win at Wiscasset Speedway. Saunders placed second. Alexander made his first Prostock podium appearance in third.
Burgess said, “The race was a little more work than it was the last time. I started in about eighth, and about halfway we took the lead. Had to work on the outside to get by Hinkley and Alexander, but once we got by them, it was just make sure you don’t make any mistakes, and get to the end. We finished with a flat right front tire, so the car was a little ill-handling the last ten laps. We were fortunate to finish. I want to thank my car owner, Ed Trask, my wife, my kids, and my crew who come every week to support me. My sponsors: Ed Trask Drywall, ProKnee, Trask Performance, Burgess Racing and Fabrication, and PJ Perrino, Attorney at Law.”
