Barre, VT – Barre’s Nick Sweet came out on top of a battle with Thunder Road Late Model point leader and fellow two-time “King of the Road” Derrick O’Donnell to with his fourth VP Fuels Vermont Governor’s Cup 150 on Thursday, July 9.
Sweet took the lead from N. Haverhill, NH’s O’Donnell on lap 125 following the fourth and final restart after stalking him for much of the event. O’Donnell made a bid to get back around Sweet on the outside, but came under attack from polesitter Cody Blake with 10 laps remaining, allowing Sweet to drive off tothe victory. Sweet moved into a tie with Robbie Crouch for the most Vermont Governor’s Cup wins of all-time.-
Blake muscled his way past O’Donnell for second with five laps remaining. O’Donnell finished third to unofficially retain the points lead. Brett Gervais and Scott Dragon rounded out the top-five. John Donahue, Jay Laquerre, Jason Corliss, Shawn Fleury, and Trampas Demers finished sixth through 10th.
Barre’s Chris Pelkey scored his second win of the year in a caution-filled and rain-shortened Bond Auto Tiger Sportsman feature. Pelkey took the lead from polesitter Tommy Smith on lap 21 and was in front when the rains came on lap 30 of the scheduled 35. It was the seventh caution of the event, which included a flip by Mike Billado on lap 28.
Fellow Barre driver Cameron Ouellette finished second followed by Worcester’s Jeffrey Bousquet. Dylan Payea, Jason Woodard, point leader Brendan Moodie, Joe Steffen, David Finck, Doug Crowningshield, and Stephen Donahue completed the top-10.
Wolcott’s Jamie Davis picked up his sixth career Allen Lumber Street Stock victory in the 25-lap feature. Davis took the lead from outside pole-sitter Ken Stridsberg on a lap-18 restart and cruised to the win.
Jamon Perry finished second with Stridsberg third. Rookie Matthew Smith, Jaden Perry, Patrick Tibbetts, Marcel J. Gravel, Chris LaForest, Kevin Streeter, and Kyle Streeter also earned top-10 finishes.
Thunder Road will be back in action on Thursday, July 16 with Fairpoint Communications Night featuring all three weekly racing divisions. Post time is 6:30pm. Admission is $12 for adults, $3 for kids ages 6-12, and $25 for a family of four (2 adults, 2 kids).
