WISCASSET SPEEDWAY PRESS RELEASE AUGUST 1, 2015
RENO PUTS AN END TO LUCAS’S WINNING STREAK AT WISCASSET!
Last Saturday was warm and sunny, a perfect day at Wiscasset Speedway. Fans gathered to watch the Group two classes in some racing action. Divisions included: Strictly Street, Outlaw Mini, Late Model Sportsman, Modified, and the flex race of the week were the Amsoil Nelcar Legends.
First on the track was the Spotlighted feature of the weekend, the Strictly Street division. Twelve racecars competed in an action packed thirty-five lap event. Starting at the pole was the #8X of Ethan Dinsmore. Beside him was the #03 of Maurice Young. In third was Cody Verrill in the #11. When green flag racing began, the #51 of Kyle Hewins passed Young on the inside for third. Kyle Hewins continued up the track on the inside and passed Young on turn one during lap two.
Kurt Hewins was advancing up the track from his seventh place start. Kurt Hewins passed Young for third during lap four. Ahead, Kyle Hewins was battling Dinsmore for the lead. Kyle Hewins came up behind Dinsmore during lap five, heading out of turn three, and bumped Dinsmore from behind. Dinsmore slid sideways on the track. A caution was called. Kyle Hewins took the lead. Kurt Hewins advanced to second. Young moved to third.
When racing action resumed Kyle and Kurt Hewins fought for the lead. Kurt Hewins bumped Kyle Hewins on the back stretch, heading into turn four, and Kyle Hewins slid into the infield. Kurt Hewins lost control and as he came out of turn three was struck by Young. All three drivers were sent to the back of the pack.
When green flag racing began once again, the #83 of Dan Brown was in the lead. In second was Verrill. The #85 of Chanler Harrison was in third. Chanler Harrison passed Verrill on the restart, taking second. The #84 of Jairet Harrison passed Verrill on the inside during lap ten for third. However, Young and Jairet Harrison made contact during lap fourteen. Both went into a spin, bringing out a caution. The new running order was Brown in the lead. Chanler Harrison in second. Kurt Hewins was back in the top three, once again in third.
On the ensuing restart, Kurt Hewins was on the inside, and passed Chanler Harrison for second. Then Kurt Hewins headed to the outside and passed Brown during lap twenty-five. Kurt Hewins took the checkered. However, Kurt Hewins failed post-race inspection and the win was awarded to Dan Brown. Chanler Harrison placed second. Rounding out the top three was Ethan Dinsmore in third.
Coming into Saturday’s race, point leader in the Strictly Street division was Kurt Hewins. Four points below him was Kyle Hewins with 356 points. Brown is a close in points with 342.
Next on the track were the Outlaw Mini’s competing in a twenty-five lap feature. Starting on the pole was Shane Smith of the #41. The #19 of Shane Kaherl was beside him. Behind was the #84 of Mike Bolduc. During the opening lap, Kaherl and Bolduc tangled, causing a jam up behind them and sending the #26 of Brent Roy into the back stretch wall.
When racing action resumed, the #81 of Bryan Lancaster passed Bolduc on the outside of turn one for third. Lancaster continued his advance up the track and passed Kaherl on the outside during lap two for second. Lancaster looked for his chance to take the lead. His opportunity came during lap three, when he passed Smith on the outside of turn three.
Coming up from behind was Shawn Kimball of the #20. Kimball passed Kaherl on the outside of turn two during lap four for third. Kimball then advanced up the track and took second when he passed Smith on the outside of turn four during lap five. Kimball then headed once again to the outside and raced door to door with Lancaster for the lead. It was not until lap twelve that Kimball was able to successfully complete a pass for the lead.
The #41 of Smith had headed to the pits with mechanical issues during lap ten and the #34 of Justin Trombley took third. Then, during lap sixteen there was a caution when Kaherl and the #13 of Cody Tribbet made contact and both went into the front stretch wall. When racing action resumed on the track, Trombley got ahead of Lancaster and took second. The following lap there was another caution when the #10 of Jimmy Childs and Lancaster got together. Jimmy Childs headed to the pits. The new running order brought the #5 of Billy Childs to third.
There was a good fight for the lead through the finish with Kimball and Trombley vying for the lead. But, ultimately Kimball took the win and Trombley placed second. Billy Childs took third.
After the race, Kimball said, “It was a hard fought win. I really had a good race with Bryan Lancaster. I went to the outside, I got by him and we ran well. Then Justin Trombley gave me a challenge at the end of the race, and he was right with me through the finish. It was a really good race. The car was running great tonight. That’s why we got the win, because the car was handling great. I want to thank L&S Auto, Ridge Line Auto, McEwens Auto Repair, my girlfriend Amanda and the car owner, Pete.”
Coming into the race, point leader was Cody Tribbet with 322 points. His closest competitor was Jimmy Childs with 248 points. In third was Trombley with 224 points.
A thirty-five lap Late Model Sportsman race was swift and exciting. The race was caution free, with a lot of door to door racing action within the pack of seventeen cars that made it to the feature. Starting at the pole was the #26 of Andrew McLaughlin. McLaughlin had the fastest car on the track on Saturday and never once relinquished his lead. Starting in second was the #34 of Tyler Robbins. Behind them was Ben Erskine of the #4.
It wasn’t until lap fifteen that there was a top three leader change, the #14 of Dave St Clair passed Erskine on the inside of turn four for third. Dave St Clair headed to the outside. Then Robbins got caught in some lap traffic and Dave St Clair passed for second during lap twenty. The #15 of Nick Hinkley followed the outside track and also passed Robbins and took third.
During lap twenty-six Hinkley went outside and began racing door to door with Dave St Clair. The following lap Hinkley was able to complete a pass for second. McLaughlin had gained a significant lead, and was nearly a quarter lap ahead. Hinkley was able to close some of the gap, but wasn’t able to catch McLaughlin before the race concluded. McLaughlin claimed his second Wiscasset Speedway Late Model Sportsman win of the season. Hinkley placed second. Dave St Clair took third.
Will Collins of the #25 was current point leader coming into the race on Saturday, with 294 points. Hinkley was six points below him with 288 points. In third was the #21 of Shane Clark with 264 points.
Post-race McLaughlin said, “We put it all together and had a good race tonight. It always helps to start up front, and we went caution-free. It was a real good night for racing and the car was really good. Wiscasset is a great place for racing and to go watch a race. We are really excited. I want to thank my dad, it was his birthday tonight, and I gave him a trophy for his birthday. I also want to thank my sponsors: McLaughlin’s Garage, Downeast Whelks, Strout’s Logging and Snowplowing, Cold Creek Plumbing and Heating, and The Wreath Shoppe.”
A twenty-five lap Amsoil Nelcar Legends race was quick and action-packed. Starting on the pole was heat winner Tylar Braunschweig of the #70. Beside him was the #84 of Matt Grant. In third was the #8 of Matt Chagnot. When the green flag waved over the track, the #33 of Alan Smith passed Chagnot for third. During lap two, the #399 of Bob Weymouth passed Smith for third. Ahead Braunschwieg and Grant raced for the lead. By lap three, Grant had taken the lead.
There was a caution during lap ten, and on the ensuing restart Weymouth passed Braunschweig for second. Another caution during lap thirteen saw Braunschweig claim second once again.
There were two more cautions during the race, and although Braunschweig was able to take brief leads off the start, he couldn’t hold off Grant. Grant raced to the finish, claiming the win. This was Grant’s first win at Wiscasset Speedway. Braunschweig claimed second. Weymouth finished in third.
In Victory Lane, Grant said, “I didn’t finish in the top three the last time I was here. I tried my best to give this one away (to Braunschweig) on the last restart. I thought I was screwed there. But it was a great car. I can’t thank my dad enough for putting this car together and all my sponsors for sticking with me.”
A thirty lap Modified race was a huge crowd pleaser. Seven time Modified winner, Mark Lucas, had his hands full with Nick Reno on the track. As the duo raced around the track, fans cheered, hooted, and yelled for their favorite drivers. Starting at the pole was the #61 of Shawn Austin. The #33 of Ron Bryant was beside him. In third was the #8 of Richard Jordan. The #85 of Jairet Harrison passed Jordan off the start for third. Harrison got under Bryant on a restart and took third. However, the action was at the back of the pack with the #7 of Reno working his way up through the field, with Lucas of the #5 hot on his heels.
By lap five, Reno had worked his way to first. Austin was holding his own in second. In third was Lucas. During lap seven, Lucas pulled to the outside and passed Austin on the back stretch. Lucas slowly advanced up the track and caught Reno, but was unable to pass. During lap twelve, the #18 of Kevin Douglas passed Austin on the outside of turn two for third.
There was a caution during lap fourteen. On the restart, Reno and Lucas raced door to door. Reno pulled ahead, and there was a roar from the crowd. Lucas moved behind Reno, and despite trying to tap Reno from behind, a determined Reno was able to hold him off through the finish. Reno roared under the checkered with Lucas a fraction of a second behind. Reno claimed his first Modified win of the season, and seven time winner, Lucas, had to settle for second. Douglass finished in third. When asked how it felt to beat Lucas, Reno replied, “I’m glad it could be me!”
Post-race Reno said, “We won! We started towards the back, but we got up front and we stayed there. It was a hard win, but we got it. I figured when the caution came out he was going to have something for us, but we held him off. I want to thank everybody: My wife, my family, Eddie, My father, my boy who loves racing, and my fans for sticking in there.”
Lucas was point leader heading into Saturday’s race, with a commanding lead. Second in points was Jairet Harrison with 330. Richard Jordan was third in points with 312.
