Oxford, Maine – Wayne Helliwell, Jr. of Dover, New Hampshire prevailed by inches in a thrilling HP Hood 150 Pro All Stars Series Super Late Model race Sunday night at Oxford Plains Speedway. Helliwell just managed to edge out Joey Polewarczyk, Jr. of Hudson, New Hampshire after an epic battle over the last dozen circuits of the 150-lap race.
Polewarczyk led most of the event’s second half, looking for his second straight PASS Super Late Model win after his career-first score at White Mountain Motorsports Park in North Woodstock, New Hampshire seven days earlier.
But Helliwell had other ideas, methodically working his way into contention from an 18th starting position to set up the late-race showdown with 12th-place starter Polewarczyk. They raced side-by-side for most of the last twelve laps, swapping lanes midway through the battle.
While it was a career-first points-counting PASS Super Late Model win for Helliwell, it was his second straight Super Late Model win at Oxford Plains Speedway after his recent 100-lap PASS non-winners score. Helliwell also became the only multi-race winner in the Super Late Model ranks this season at the historic speedplant.
Mike Landry of Oakland took a few tours of the oval as race leader before crossing the finish line in third position, his best-ever run at OPS. PASS North Super Late Model points leader DJ Shaw helped out his championship quest with a fourth-place finish. Veteran Tracy Gordon of Strong rounded out the top five.
Reid Lanpher of Manchester was sixth. Eddie MacDonald of Rowley, Massachusetts filled in for the injured Joey Doiron and finished in seventh position. Garrett Hall of Scarborough, Glen Luce of Turner and Jay’s Dave Farrington, Jr. rounded out the top ten.
David Vaughn of Naples picked up his first PASS Modified win in a caution-filled 40-lap race. Vaughn held off last year’s track champion, Ryan Robbins of Dixfield, to claim victory. Vaughn, driving for former championship owner Dave Weir, started the race from fifth position.
Robbins took down runner-up honors, with six-time series champion Andy Shaw of Center Conway ending up in third position. Dana Reed of Shapleigh and New Gloucester’s Ben Tinker rounded out the top five.
Austin Teras of Windham extended his points lead in the Legends Cars class with yet another 25-lap triumph. Years inherited the lead when frontrunners Peter Craig and Trevor Sanborn spun from the lead and took a couple of other frontrunners off track with them.
Teras, 13, went on to post an easy victory in front of Pembroke, New Hampshire’s Casey Call. Colby Meserve of Buxton claimed the third-place trophy, with the top five filled out by Roger Edgecomb of Hiram and Windham’s Parker Varney.
