Brad and Jayson Bosworth of Cornville led all 35 laps of the Coca Cola Company Sport-Four Series race #1 at Speedway 95 Saturday night, with a surprise twist at the end determining the winner. Brad Bosworth led the first 33 laps of the race with brother Jayson, Newburgh’s Darren Durrell, Milford’s Garett Hayman and Carmel’s Ted Ryder all fighting for positions two through five. When the third caution of the event stopped the action on lap 33 for a solo spin in turn one by Dixmont’s Lewis Batchelder, the Bosworths lined up on the front row for the restart and, when the green fell, Brad resumed his lead when Jayson missed a shift and fell to fifth by the time the field reached turn one.
As luck would have it for Jayson, the yellow flew again before the lap was complete when rookie Dylan Street of Old Town and Hermon’s Andrew Crosby tangled and spun in turn three while jockeying for the sixth spot. Because the lap was not completed, Jayson was placed back in the second position on the restart alongside brother Brad, who was still the leader. When the green flew, it was Brad’s turn to miss a shift, and Jayson assumed the lead which he held for the final two lap run to the checkers. Brad finished in second after a spirited battle with Darren Durrell for the spot. Durrell finished in third with Hayman finishing fourth after racing side by side with Ryder for the final laps with Ryder finishing fifth. Rounding out the top 10 in the 22 car field were Donny Silva of Hudson, Jeremy Scott of Carmel, Dennis and Becky Burns of Carmel , and Dixmont’s Lewis Batchelder. Heat race winners for the night were Jason Trundy of Winterport, Brad Bosworth and Jayson Bosworth.
In the Dysart’s Late Models, it was Brenton Parritt of Steuben leading all the way from the pole to the checkers, but a caution on lap 32 tightened up the field and making it an interesting ending to the 40 lap event. On lap 31, just prior to the final caution, Winterport’s Ryan Deane had worked his way up to the second spot, finally passing Paul White of Corinna on the inside. Deane then lined up beside Parritt for the restart, but was unable to unseat him from the lead. Parritt won the event with Deane in second, followed by Harrington’s Andrew McLaughlin only a half car length behind. Fourth went to Hermon’s Mike Hopkins with Corinth driver Lloyd Nickerson picking up his first top five of the season. White finished sixth with 2013 champion Andy Saunders of Ellsworth finishing seventh in a ride borrowed from Orrington’s Jim Robichaud. John Kalel II of Orrington finished eighth, with Hermon’s John Curtis Jr. and Eastbrook’s George Dunn II rounding out the top 10. Late Model Heat race winners were Paul White and Brenton Parritt.
Darling’s Ford Sportsman action saw Kris Matchett of Skowhegan pick up his third win of the season after he took the lead from Dean Smart of Bradley on lap 14 of the 25 lap feature. Smart finished in second, followed by D.C. Alexander of Glenburn in third. Fourth went to Hampden’s Karl Stanhope, who led the early laps of the race, with Glenburn’s Emma Libby finishing in fifth. The race was halted only once for a solo spin by Mike Overlock on the front stretch on lap 5. Deane Smart won the heat race for the division.
Fourteen cars took the green flag in the Pepsi-Cola Strictly Streets with Harrington’s Alex Berry winning for the third time in three races this season. Starting mid way through the field, Berry took advantage of a lap 13 caution caused when a three wide battle for the lead resulted in Glenburn’s Jordan Pearson getting a flat tire after a scraping battle down the front stretch with leader Bob Seger Jr. of Frankfort. Berry was able to take the lead from Seger on the restart and hold it to the end. Seger finished second with Chris King of Burnham finishing third in his first appearance of the season. Fourth went to Cornville’s Matt Kimball with Jeff Alley of Machias finishing fifth. Heat race winners were Alex Berry and Jordan Pearson.
Visiting the speedway for the first time this season was the Wicked Good Vintage Racing League, who ran three feature events for the fans to enjoy. Tim Reynolds of Bradley took the checkers in the Late Model Sportsman/Outlaw division, followed by Bob Guyon of Winthrop, Kris Watson of Hermon, John Rice of Bristol and C.D. Farnsworth of Orono. In the first Late Model Feature, it was Mark Thurlow of Lincolnville leading all 20 laps for the win, followed by Bobby Symonds of Casco, Norris Willette of Winslow, Scott Tucker of Winthrop and Keith Smalley of Warren. Dean Grant of Detroit won the second Late Model Feature, followed by Mark Collins of Hope, Rosey Gerry of Lincolnville, George Harding of Fairfield, and Brian Hughes of W. Paris. Heat race winners were Dean Grant, Bobby Symonds and Kris Watson.
Racing action resumes at the 1/3 mile Hermon oval on Saturday, May 31 at 7:00 when the Dysart’s Late Models. Darling’s Ford Sportsman, Pepsi Beverage Company Strictly Streets and Coca-Cola Sport-Fours will all compete in regular length feature and qualifying races.
