On Saturday evening of June 14, the race that many consider to be the crown jewel of pavement Modified Open shows; the fourth annual SBM 125 IV will take place at Star Speedway in Epping, New Hampshire. The total purse has grown to more than $44,000 as a result of unprecedented support from race fans and small businesses, with still ten more days for it to increase further.

This premier event for tour-type Modifieds has grown each season since it began in 2011 to help bring teams extra purse money and this fourth annual will be no different. It brings the most diverse field of Modified talent all season to the two-groove quarter-mile oval known as the track, “Where Champions are Made,” because it is where Champion drivers such as Chris Perley, Russ Wood and Bobby Santos learned to win races.

Car counts for the SBM 125 have increaed each season, from 16 in 2011, to 28 and then 32 of the best last year. That field of 32 had multiple drivers from the NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour, the Valenti Modified Racing Series and Race of Champions tour teams competing against the best from Star Speedway weekly competition.

The combination of this talent level, a two-groove quarter-mile race track with surface grip, Hoosier Racing Tires and an optional pit stop for a new right rear tire forces drivers to race hard to win, and race fans are the beneficiary of that.

“I consider the SBM 125 to be one of the top ten races of the year in all of racing,” states upstate New York dirt track race fan Jim Osterhoudt. “Like the end on year races on the dirt at Penn Can, Accord and Five Mile Point, the drivers come from all regions and are not tied down with points and such.

“Put the best of the three tours on a competitive track and you have a race that is reminiscent of the old Oswego 200’s. These are not guys that normally race against each other, and that makes it old time racing that is missing in many of today’s pavement races. Something the dirt tracks realize is important, but it seems lost with the tour pavement races.” This combination of stars, along with a good base payoff of $25,000, plus an unmatched number of monetary bonus awards last year that reached nearly $20,000 in all, make this a race like no other.

Thank’s to Long Island race fan Jim Schaefer, every qualified car this year will have earned $1,000 just to start the race. Last year’s feature winner Matt Hirschman earned a more than $9,800 payday.

Drivers, such as NWMT Champion Ryan Preece, VMRS Champion Rowan Pennink, RoC Tour Champion Matt Hirschman, NWSMT star Andy Seuss, past Star Speedway Champion Josh Cantara will be challenged by other champions in their own right.

Kirk Alexander, Andy Jankowiak, Chris Pasteryak, Todd Szegedy, Woody Pitkat, Jon McKennedy, Max Zachem, Richard Savary, Tommy Barrett, Steve Masse and Todd Annarummo are just a few of the names already making plans to compete at this one of a kind spectacle.

A majority of the competing race teams will also be racing for the $10,000 Tri-Track Open Modified Series Crown, open to those who competed at Lee, N.H. in May, this event on June 14, and the Seekonk, Mass., event in July.

Drivers will be racing hard to stay on the top ten all race long, putting them in position for close to $7,000 in lap money paid half to the leader and half to another top ten car on every lap run. An additional halfway bonus has just been confirmed that will pay out more than $2,000 in all, split among the top ten running race teams on lap 63.

Pit gates swing open on this one day Modified show at 12:00 noon, with practice and qualifying to follow. Star Speedway weekly division qualifying that includes the Allen’s Outlaw Late Models, Woody’s Strictly Stocks and Kimball Auto Body Road Runners are tentatively scheduled to begin at at 5:15 PM.

The four quality and very competitive heat races qualifying five cars each, begin at 6:00 PM, with features, the SBM 125 B-Main and then the fourth annual SBM 125 IV scheduled to go green at approximately 8:30 PM following a few very special awards during the prerace ceremony.

Mark your calendars now for what promises to be the one of the best events ever held at Star Speedway, and likely the highest paying race ever held at the Epping, New Hampshire oval, located on Route 27, just off NH Route 125 and 101. Admission is only $25 for adults, $20 for juniors and seniors, and kids 10 and under are admitted absolutely FREE with a paid adult.

There was a big question mark surrounding the beginning of the 2014 season for the dozen weekly tracks and two touring series of the American Canadian Tour. After nearly a decade of racing with the specially designed Goodyear Eagle slicks, a change was mandated at the end of the 2013 season.

“We faced a seemingly daunting task at the end of the 2012 season when Goodyear announced that they were going to discontinue their short track program. ACT was fortunate to negotiate an extra year with Goodyear to allow us to work to find a suitable replacement tire,” said Tom Curley, President of the American Canadian Tour (ACT).

American Racer, a division of Specialty Tires of America from Indiana, Pennsylvania became the tire of choice. Don Mateer, III is the President and CEO of Specialty Tires of America. “Our company became very interested in working with the American Canadian Tour to fill their tire needs. ACT has been a welcome addition to our family of race tracks and organizations. We are delighted that our engineering and manufacturing efforts have been able to supply the teams throughout the ACT network in the Northeast,” said Mateer. The contract between American Racer and ACT and its affiliates is for six years, with extension options.

Beginning in the Spring of 2013, a joint effort between American Racer and ACT was conducted over a five-month period. There were seven on-site track test sessions conducted in order to develop the final product. Six different race teams at various length tracks, including a 7/8ths mile tri-oval, a flat half mile, a ¼ mile high-banked facility, and the New Hampshire Motor Speedway were used to complete the testing process.

Scott Junod, the newly appointed Director of Racing for Race Tires America, was previously with the Goodyear short track tire program. His association with ACT during those years helped to make the decision to work with Specialty Tires of America much easier for ACT. “We had an excellent working relationship with Scott at Goodyear. When Don (Mateer) informed me that he was negotiating with Scott to join the Race Tires America team that certainly provided a comfort level going forward. The choice of American Racer Tires has become a positive outcome for our tire needs. All former tire accounts have returned, and we actually have added several new accounts,” said Curley.

Early season tire results have proven to be better than could be expected. Tire bills have been reduced with the American Racer tires, wear and repeatability on tires has been outstanding, and what has been very noticeable with the newly developed tire, is just how competitive the tire is during the second half of a long distance event.

“I knew teams would like the tire after they got used to them,” said Nick Sweet whose team was the primary test team throughout 2013. “I have not heard of any complaints or issues during the first couple of months of the new season,” he concluded.

ACT Rookie of the Year candidate Kyle Welch from Newport, NH said, “Our team really likes this new tire. We raced it to a decent finish in the April Thunder Road 150-lap event. I then took the tires two weeks later with over 170 laps on them and ran over 100 more practice laps and the times remained very consistent. That’s amazing! Using just four tires instead of six for 150 lap events is a huge savings over the course of the season for a family-run team like ours.”

“Dean Gallison, the Director of Competition at ACT said, “Change is always unpredictable and there is no question that we had lots of nervous teams when the announcement came that we had to make a tire change. Scott McAdoo, Manager of Racing at Race Tires America and Mick McCombie, Race Tire & Project Engineer did a great job designing the exact tire that we needed to keep our racers competitive and the tires cost effective. I especially like that they continue to give their engineering expertise to many of our teams at events and have established very good relations with the ACT management. We have had absolutely no problems with tires at any races or tracks through the first third of the season that I am aware of, and that makes for happy racers,” concluded Gallison.

Specialty Tires of America is one of the nation’s oldest tire manufacturers, having been founded in 1915; this is the 99th year of continuing operation. Coast-to-coast dealers and distribution networks with a very strong philosophy of attempting to keep usage costs to the racers down has been the initiative of American Racer from the beginning. That philosophy fits perfectly with the 28-year ACT business model of controlling costs, having large numbers of race teams for both weekly and touring events, and highly competitive racing for stock car fans.

Longtime veteran of Thunder Road stock car racing, Joey Laquerre of East Montpelier earned his 14th career Late Model feature win during FairPoint Communications night on Thursday, June 5. It was the first Thunder Road Thursday night event of 2014. Laquerre held off both Shawn Fleury and Brett Gervais during multiple restarts to claim the win and move into a tie for fourth on the all-time Thunder Road Late Model wins list.

Fleury and Gervais finished second and third respectively in the caution plagued 50-lap event. Dave Pembroke appeared to have the fastest car on the track at one point but couldn’t find room to get to the front after several caution periods near the end of the event. He settled for fourth followed by Brooks Clark. Nick Sweet, Derrick O’Donnell, Josh Demers, Jason Corliss and Kyle Pembroke completed the top ten.

The 24-car field was quickly cut down to 20 as a pile up in turn one with just one lap complete ended the day of Ricky Roberts, Eric Chase, Dave Whitcomb and Eric Badore. Several other cars were involved, but were able to continue. The event would see eight total cautions.

Eric Johnson of Randolph Center claimed his first career Bond Auto Tiger Sportsmen win after leading the 35-lap event flag-to-flag. He held off fellow podium finishers “Double-O” Joe Steffen and Mike Billado. Point leader Jason Woodard and Tucker Williams completed the top five. Dylan Payea, Doug Crowningshield, Brendan Moodie, Cameron Ouellette and Joel Hodgdon all earned top tens.

Wolcott’s Jamie Davis scored his third career Allen Lumber Street Stock win. He held off Kyle Streeter on a green-white-checkered finish, while Dave Whitcomb took his second straight podium finish in third. Garry Bashaw and Jennifer Getty rounded out the top five.

The highlight of the Street Stock 25-lap feature was a barrel-roll down the front stretch by Berlin’s Ken Stridsberg on lap 23. The roll brought the field under red, but Stridsberg was ok.

All three Thunder Road divisions will be back in action next Thursday, June 12 with Harvest Equipment night. Post time will be 6:30 pm.

The Oxford Acceleration Series kicks off this coming Wednesday night, June 11th at 7pm. In action will be the Runnin’ Rebels, Outlaws, Sport Trucks, Ladies and the all new six cylinder Cruiser division. This is a great way to break into the sport of auto racing at Oxford Plains Speedway.

The brand new PASS Northeast Late Model Series will be opening up on Friday night June 13th at 7:30 pm. A good field of cars will be on hand for this giant event. Post time is 7:30 pm, and Applebee’s will be sponsoring the night’s activities. Stay tuned here as we will be announcing a big new sponsor for the three Series events.

The NAPA Show, Shine & Drag event is scheduled for Father’s Day, Sunday, June 15th, starting at 9 am. Vintage vehicles as well as muscle cars, hot rods, motorcycles, drag racing, one lunger engines, and a whole lot more is on this year’s schedule. OPS has also added a chicken and ribs BBQ, plus a beer garden and music to give everyone a full day of activities. Admission is just $5, and the event will be held rain or shine!

Another highlight event for the 2014 season is the Locke Crane Services, Bentley Warren ISMA Super Modified Classic scheduled for Friday night, June 20th at 7:30 pm. It has been a few years since the Super Modifieds have raced at OPS and they will put on an awesome show. They will be racing for the coveted Coastal 181 Cup that will go to the winner of the event. Bentley Warren himself will be the honorary Grand Marshall for the show. Also on the card will be The Pro Late Models, Street Stocks, Outlaw Sportsman and Bandito’s. $10 off discount coupons can be found at many stores throughout the area.

The 2014 editions of the Oxford 250 and the Monster Truck Throwdown advanced ticket sales are way surpassing the amounts sold in 2013. Interest is at an all time high for these two mega-events, and people are calling daily to get good reserved seats. To reserve your tickets you can go onto our website, www.oxfordplains.com, and click on the events. You can order online, or call the office to purchase tickets. 207-539-8865.

The number of competitors that have been racing in the Pro Late Model class have been some of the biggest seen here at OPS in many years. Opening day saw twenty-nine cars while each of the rest of the events has been in the thirties. Last week took a toll on some teams, and a couple of them may not be ready for this week’s show, but hopefully most will be in attendance. Three races have produced three different winners. TJ Brackett, Trevor Sanborn and Quinney Welch have all carried the checkers, while TJ Brackett also is on top of the point standings.

If you haven’t been to a Friday night Budweiser, OCS event, you are missing out on some great racing entertainment. The Street Stocks and Outlaws are incredible. They have been racing three and four wide not only in the features but also the qualifying heats. Highly exciting!!

The all new four cylinder Bandito’s had their first race last week and it was a good one. Ten cars entered the inaugural event won by Jamie Heath. This novice class is just plain fun. Want to go racing? You can get one of these rigs on the track for less than $500.

Many people have been asking how the point system works. Here you! Heats are worth 5-4-3-2-1, and only the top five cars in the heats get any points. Feature points are 60-58-56-54-52-50 with a two point graduation through the field. Everyone receives a minimum of 2 points.

Get your Applebee’s Super Fan Card punched at every race and earn free race tickets. Ten punches give you a free ticket to a regularly priced weekly show. Haven’t got one yet? Ask for yours at the ticket booth!

The Granite State Pro Stock Series drivers completed 100 laps at Monadnock Speedway Saturday night, but what they did off the track may be more important.

The entire field of drivers in attendance wielded helmets in between local division feature events to raise money for 8 year-old Allen Hinckley, son of veteran Modified racer Les Hinckley. Allen just recently returned from a 17-day stay at Connecticut Children’s Hospital and a recent two-week stay at Boston Children’s Hospital where he underwent his third surgical procedure for a Congenital Arachnoid Cyst.

Arachnoid cysts are rare, and the cause of which are unknown. In Allen’s case, the young boy had surgery to put a shunt and valve system in his head to relieve pressure to his brain. With this unfortunate situation, the family has spent time away from work and a large chunk of time in hospitals, putting a huge strain on the Hinckley family.

The GSPSS drivers were asked if they could help at Monadnock Speedway, and the drivers answered the call. Dressed in full gear, drivers grabbed their helmets and visited the crowd, gathering donations for the family. In just a short amount of time, the GSPSS took in $1,250.35 for the Hinckley family.

The 2013 series champion Mike O’Sullivan was touched by the collection. “I know Les pretty well and he is a good guy,” O’Sullivan stated. “We’ve had conversations about how racing is secondary to family, and wouldn’t sacrifice something for our boys, to race ourselves. I hope that Allen will get better, and pray for all the best for Les and his family.”

The support does not stop with the GSPSS. Seekonk Grand Prix proprietor Wayne Darling, a longtime race car owner, will open early this Saturday, June 7, and donate all money taken in between 9:00 AM and 2:00 PM to help the Hinckley family. Also, Saturday, June 7 at Sonny’s Place, 349 Main St, Somers, CT., there will be a special event dubbed “Come Support Allen” with music, dancing, food, and beverages. Tickets are $25 per person. The event will be held from 4:00 PM to 8:00 PM.

The entire staff, drivers, and fans wish Allen and the Hinckley family the best, and hope this small fundraiser helps in the fight against this unfortunate ordeal.

The Granite State Pro Stock Series will make the trip to Hudson, NH, for the Gate City Classic at Hudson International Speedway, June 15.

The 2014 Gate City Classic marks the fifth time the GSPSS has taken the asphalt at Hudson, which is a fan favorite on the tour. Close quarters, fender-rubbing racing is the norm at the bullring, which has seen three different winners in the previous four races. Second-place point man in 2012, Bobby Baillargeon, has two victories under his belt at the Speedway, with the two champions of the series, Bobby Cabral (’12) and Mike O’Sullivan (’13), notching victories as well.

Recent feature winner Matt Frahm boasts the best average at Hudson, finishing 3rd in both events he has entered. Frahm trails leader Larry Gelinas by 9 points entering the event, a track that Gelinas owns a 2nd and 9th place finish. Belchertown, MA driver Barry Gray is a model of consistency at Hudson, never finishing outside of the top 10 in all four events with the series.

The tour will see some new faces in action at the speedway. Cory Casagrande will make his debut with the GSPSS, driving the co-owned Casagrande Builders Chevrolet, shared with Jeff Connors. Connors debuted the ride at the Icebreaker, and was a threat to win all day long, but settled for third in his return behind the wheel.

Also making his GSPSS debut, George Helliwell has filed entry for the Gate City Classic. Helliwell, best known for his domination in the North East Classic Lites (NECL) series. Since 2010, Helliwell has posted over 20 victories in the NECL, and a remarkable 12 out of 13 wins in 2012 (a second in the 13th race), en route to the championship. The Derry, NH driver will be piloting the Here We Grow Day Care Center/RLS Landscaping Chevrolet, which was built in-house and driven by his father 20 years ago. Hudson was an easy choice for Helliwell to enter, as he has completed many circuits on the small bullring. “I want keep the car on the pavement and out of the pond,” jokes Helliwell. “All kidding aside, I have a lot to learn, so I need to become a student once again. Stay out of trouble, finish 100 laps, and learn from the veterans like Cabral, O’Sullivan, and Frahm.” Helliwell is the brother to two-time ACT champ Wayne Jr, who is a feature winner on the GSPSS.

Hometown driver Derek Griffith is looking forward to the Gate City Classic. Griffith handled adversity with the poise of a veteran at Monadnock, as the 16 year-old driver started on the pole for the feature, but was involved in an incident before the first lap was completed, and still recorded a seventh-place finish. Griffith will likely have a huge fan base in his hometown, but isn’t letting that affect his focus. “I really want to do well at my hometrack,” states Griffith. “I don’t think there’s added pressure here, but more like higher hopes to finish well.” Griffith sits fourth in the point standings entering this event.

The Gate City Classic at Hudson International Speedway will take place on June 15th. Post time for this event is 4 PM.

Jason Durgan became a first-time winner at Devil’s Bowl Speedway on Friday, June 6, taking the 30-lap Bond Auto Parts Modified event on “Facebook Friday” for the NASCAR Whelen All-American Series. Durgan, of Morrisonville, NY, headlined a winner’s list that included Robert Bryant, Jr., Robert Gordon, Jake Noble, Scott MacMichael, and Shawn Fountain.

Durgan, who was eliminated in a crash last week, benefitted from a pole position starting spot in the 30-lap main event and led every step of the way. His No. 17 Clear Shot Satellite/Taylor Rental Teo jetted out to an early advantage, but that was wiped away with nine laps remaining as front-runners Todd Stone, Ron Proctor, and Jessey Mueller tangled. Durgan was forced to fend off Vince Quenneville, Jr., at the restart, then drove to the landmark win.
Quenneville had his hands full with Leon Gonyo at the end of the race, and they finished in that order behind the winner. Joey Roberts continued his strong start with a fourth-place finish, and Cody Sargen recovered from an early altercation for his first top-five finish in two years. Mueller, Jamie LaFountain, Stone, Johnny Scarborough, and Proctor completed the top ten.

Robert Bryant, Jr., made a move early to take the lead in the 25-lap feature for the Late Model division and never looked back. The Brooklyn, CT driver sped to the victory, his first since his rookie season in 2012. Veteran drivers Jamie Fisher and Bucko Branham dueled for the runner-up spot for nearly the entire distance, with Fisher eventually earning the spot. Josh Masterson and Emily Packard were next in line.

Robert Gordon of Milton, VT made it two-for-two in the 15-lap Renegade feature. Gordon started last on the field and caught young Stephen Donahue late in the race for the lead. Richard Lowrey, III, who missed last week’s event to play in a Champlain Valley Union High School lacrosse game, also slipped by Donahue for the runner-up finish. Gordon’s win gives him first-place in the Renegade class, with 12 career victories.

Jake Noble and Chuck Bradford provided a hair-raising finish in the Central Vermont Motorcycles Mini Stock division’s 15-lap event. Bradford dived underneath Noble entering the final corner, making significant contact and sending Noble’s car into a slide. Bradford immediately slowed and allowed Noble to regain control, then the two drag-raced to the checkered flag. Benson, VT driver Noble, the defending champion, won by a matter of feet. Mike Whalen, Jr., finished a tight third, followed by Lacey Hanson and Chris LaVair.

The open-wheel SK Light division returned for its second event and saw Scott MacMichael of Newbury, NH post his first victory. Rookie T.J. Bleau was second in his Devil’s Bowl debut, with Norm Forest third.

Shawn “Mr. Bojangles” Fountain of Plattsburgh, NY won the 50-lap season opener for the Enduro Series. His father, “Wild Bill” Fountain was the runner-up, with track champion Eric “Mongo” Messier third.

Devil’s Bowl Speedway returns to action on Father’s Day, Sunday, June 15 at 1:30 p.m. with the rescheduled 101.5 The Fox Spring Green for the American-Canadian Tour Late Models. The NASCAR Whelen All-American Series Modified, Renegade, and Mini Stock divisions will be on hand, along with the SK Lights. General admission is $20 for adults, $18 for seniors (age 62+), and free for children age 12 and under.

Devil’s Bowl Speedway is located on Route 22A in West Haven, VT four miles north of Exit 2 on U.S. Route 4.
