Johnny Clark of Farmingdale made his first appearance in a couple of years pay off, earning over $2500 with a victory in the Twin 59s In Memory of Big John Phippen on Sunday at Unity Raceway.
Clark, who won the first 59-lap race, outpointed second-race victor Frank Moulton of Burnham for the overall victory. Liberty’s Josh St. Clair was third overall, with the top five filled out by Palmyra’s Ajay Picard and Dylan Turner of Freedom.
“This victory means a lot, both to me and my father,” the winner said in victory lane, after performing the familiar Big John Phippen victory lap, running laps around the winning car, owned by Dean Fuller of Albion, while waving the checkered flag. “He won a race here in 1981 and in tech they thought there’s no way he could beat John Phippen without cheating.
“When I won my first Pro Stock race at Wiscasset it was John Phippen who finished second.” That race was a 150-lap special event, when Clark was just 17-years-old.
“This is my third win on Father’s Day at Unity, but my first as a father,” Clark said. “I wanted to win this race real bad for my father. I’ll tell you, these Late Models are a lot harder to drive than the Pro Stocks I’ve won with here before.”
In the first 59-lapper Brian Whitney of Burnham led much of the distance, swapping the lead late in the race with Johnny Clark, who got to the checkered flag first by less than a car length over Whitney. Josh St.Clair was third, with Dylan Turner coming from last starting position to finish fourth. Moulton was fifth.
Moulton took command from Skowhegan’s David Folsom I mid-way through the second half of the main event, outrunning Ajay Picard to the finish line. Johnny Clark, Ryan St. Clair and Josh St. Clair rounded out the top five.
Chris King of Burnham outran point leader Brent ‘Pooch’ Chase, also from Burnham, in the 25-lap Wildcat division event. Montville’s Bryan Robbins was the official third-place finisher after Skowhegan’s Kris Matchett failed a post-race technical inspection. Joe Harriman of Liberty was fourth, followed by Ed Gilblair of Skowhegan.
Tim Robinson of Clinton drove the Jimmy Dennis 38 to a convincing win in the 25-lap Late Model Pro Four race. Bryan Lancaster of Skowhegan earned runner-up honors, with the podium filled out by Alex Fernald of Benton. Bryan Lancaster of Skowhegan and Norm Cummings, Jr. of Augusta rounded out the top five.
Zach Audet continued his dominance of the Monster Mini Stock class with another impressive win. Tim Collins of Farmingdale was the best of the rest in the 25-lapper. Brent Roy of Vassalboro ended up in third position, followed by teenaged Clinton brothers Kyle and Cole Robinson.
Cody Robbins of Oakland charged from the back of the starting grid to win the 25-lap race for the Flyin’ 4 division in spectacular fashion, just getting past Oakland’s Mike Mathieu on the final circuit. Mathieu, who led the first 24 laps, crossed the finish line in second position. Skowhegan’s Ed Archer was third, followed by Mike Dulaney of Richmond and Clinton’s Alica Goodwin.
Ken Lord of Waterville completed a weekend sweep of the action in the six-cylinder Challenger division. Oakland’s Robert MacDonald was the runner-up. Christie Foster of Skowhegan led the majority of the event, ending up in third position. Mike Flagg of Montville and Norridgewock’s Rick Sirois rounded out the top five.
Kyle Jackson of Fairfield made a late-race charge past Colby Robbins of Montville to claim victory in the 15-lap main event for Teen Thunder division competitors. Robert Dyer of Canaan finished third, in front of Burnham’s Danielle McAlpine.
