Billado, Davis Pick Up Feature Wins
Barre, VT – Multi-time champion Cris Michaud of East Montpelier stormed to his 18th feature victory at Thunder Road under the lights on Thursday night’s (June 28) FairPoint Communications event. Michaud had to hold off the blistering pace of young Cody Blake, who claimed the runner up position for his second podium finish in a row. Eric Chase surged late to complete the podium as he grabbed third at the line.
Michaud wasted no time running to the front in the caution free event, stretching out a quarter lap lead while a four car battle for second brewing behind him. Blake finally escaped and gave chase late, and had just arrived at Michaud’s bumper when the checkers flew.
“These guys worked their tails off. We had a rough time last week, so this is great,” remarked Michaud. “Cody was real good, so we knew we needed to get a jump and then run and hide,” he quipped.
Scott Payea, and defending Champion Dave Pembroke helped their championship efforts finishing fourth and fifth. Phil Scott took a dent out of the points lead gap with a sixth place effort, Trampas Demers, Brooks Clark, point leader Nick Sweet, and Joey Becker completed the top ten.
Essex’s Mike Billado survived the Bond Auto Tiger feature event to claim his first win of 2012. Grand Isle’s “Double O” Joe Steffen had the crowd on their feet after a daring three wide move put him in a no-holds-barred duel with Washington’s Chris Roberts over the last 5 laps. Roberts claimed the runner-up spot as Steffen was forced to settle for third. Tucker Williams took fourth, and Jason Allen survived a vicious last lap wreck that included top point drivers Bobby Therrien, Eric Badore, Mike Martin, and Brendan Moodie Jr., to round out the top five.
Redemption finally came to Wolcott’s Jamie Davis in the Allen Lumber Street Stock feature, notching the victory over former Junkyard Warrior Champion Donnie Yates. Davis, who lead in each of the last three races, but was struck by motor problems late, is thrilled to have finally reached victory lane.
“I saw Donnie and I knew I had my work cut out for me. But hey, it finally held together!” said a jubilant Davis.
Current point leader Nick Pilotte struggled in qualifying with a flat tire, and later a brutal wreck that left two cars on their roofs, but miraculously salvaged a third place finish out of the night. Rookie Dean Switser Jr. came home on his tail in fourth, and Cameron Ouellette rounded out the top five.
Thunder Road’s best will be on display again next Tuesday night, July 3rd with its annual 4th of July holiday special sponsored by Northfield Savings Bank. Post time is 6:30, and the annual fireworks display will follow all the racing action.
