Barre, VT – Barre’s own Thunder Road International Speedbowl hits the home stretch for its 2014 season this Thursday, July 31 with WDEV/Calkins Portable Toilets night. Thursday night will close out the month of July leaving just four more Thursdays plus the Coca-Cola Labor Day Classic in August to decide the 2014 Late Model “King of the Road.”
Two-time Late Model Champion and 2014 Vermont Governor’s Cup winner Nick Sweet of Barre currently sits atop the standings by a slim three-point lead over another two-time “King of the Road” Dave Pembroke. Pembroke is looking toward this Thursday to claim his first win of the season and erase the three-point deficit. Defending Thunder Road track champion Derrick O’Donnell and this year’s Times-Argus Mid-Season Champion Trampas Demers ride just eight points behind Pembroke, while outstanding rookie driver Eric Badore holds the final top five spot.

Emily Packard
EAST MONTPELIER, Vt – Instead of spending valuable time at Airborne Park Speedway dialing the car in for the American Canadian Tour International 300 race, Emily Packard and her team spent all of Saturday in the race shop repairing the car from the previous night at Devil’s Bowl. The time paid off, as Packard was able to drive her 9x Northstar Fireworks/Packard Fuels car to an overall tenth place finish in a race that saw late model drivers from both ACT and SÉRIE ACT compete for the $25,000 purse.
In practice, Packard and the team focused on getting the car race ready and ensuring that the damages from Friday night were repaired. Taking to the track for the heat, Packard started in the 6th position, and in the 10 laps drove her way to the 4th spot and securing her starting position in the race. This gave her a +2 and earned her a 9th place start in the first segment.

Eddie MacDonald “struggled” with the Hancock Electric Motor Chevy for most of the 2nd annual ACT International 300 at Airborne Speedway in Plattsburgh, N.Y. posting a 13th place finish. The #17Mass. Late Model owned by Freddie Peterson from Peterson’s Auto Body located in Saugus, Mass. completed the first two segments in eighth and ninth place respectively but was unable to complete a lap on the half-mile oval’s final 75 lap segment.
“We struggled right from the first practice trying to find some speed but nothing worked,” said the frustrated Eddie Mac. “It was one of those days that you can honestly say we tried every possible combination but nothing gave us the speed we needed. We seem to struggle at this track. We had one good run here last year and we even tried that set-up but that didn’t work either. It was frustrating for Rollie, the crew and me. We thought we maybe hit on something during the first segment but even that didn’t last.”
