Waterbury, VT – The 16th annual Merchants Bank 150 opening event at Thunder Road in Barre, Vermont offers a big advantage for the hometown ACT Late Model race teams. The high banks and famous fourth turn “widow maker” have proven to be major obstacles for generations of “outsiders”. Not so for the regular Thunder Road graduates.
The opening event on the Tour, held at Lee USA earlier this month, was highlighted by some outstanding performances from Thunder Road alumni, including Emily Packard from East Montpelier, VT. In just her second year of tour racing, the 17 year-old Packard had an impressive two days of racing at Lee USA. Likewise, Rookie of the Year contender Mike Ziter from Williamstown, VT, in his first ever ACT event, was steady throughout the highly competitive 150-lap event won with a late race charge by Rowley, MA veteran Eddie MacDonald.

This past weekend the MOAT Mountain Legends returned to NHMS to race on the 1.6 mile road course. Alex Vorrilas was last season’s rookie of the year qualified 3rd for the feature with a lap time of 1:24.034. “I’m not sure how the racing was because we didn’t do any wheel to wheel racing. Last weekend at NHMS was a pretty typical weekend for us. It seems like we either break or get on the podium, and we started off the season right back on that path for 2014. It’s discouraging to say the least. Our goal for the first race weekend was just to finish, because with no drops this season is all about consistency. Unfortunately the axle broke on the formation lap, and we were unable to even start the race. Things break, and unfortunately in motorsports it happens a lot. The car is already fixed and back together, but this is an opportunity to take a break from the roller coaster ride we have had the past season into this season and see where we want to go from here.”

Beaulieu Racing
This weekend the Pro All Stars Series (PASS) kicks off the 2014 race season at Oxford Plains Speedway. Then PASS will head to BRMS where former NELCAR Legends Champion Evan Beaulieu, will try and qualify for the PASS SLM feature. “We plan on starting the season at BRMS for the PASS race, and from there it all depends on sponsorship. We do plan on running the Oxford 250, if I can find a ride for that race it will make it a lot easier for us to be competitive. It just makes more sense to do it with another car since we race at BRMS the night before. From there maybe we will run a few others towards the end of the season.”
The one thing all drivers do in the off season is to get ready for the next race season, “It’s been a very busy off season for us, we’ve been working hard getting our new car ready for the start of our season at BRMS in a few weeks. Between that and working at Hancock Lumber and building my Nitro Designs Company, I haven’t had much time for anything else. It was a rough winter up here in Maine, I’m more than ready to get back behind the wheel.”

Hickory, NC – After being delayed a day due to rain, DJ Shaw and the #60 Precision JLM Racing team started their 2014 campaign in Victory Lane as they celebrated a big win in the “Easter Bunny 150” at Hickory Motor Speedway. After pacing for the first two thirds of the event, Shaw made some daring moves in the closing laps and was relentless as he got by Tyler Church in the final turn of the final lap to score the victory.

“I was certainly more aggressive than usual there,” Shaw said of the closing laps, “We just rode for the first part of that race then with about 25 laps to go it was go time, the 7 (Church) and I raced hard there at the end, it was a little too close for comfort but I wasn’t going to let this one get away again.”
