Wiscasset Speedway Press Release 5/1/17

Fans & racers who had been forced to wait an extra week to get their much-anticipated racing fix were rewarded Saturday afternoon as sunny skies and summer-like temps greeted them at the unveiling of the new and improved Wiscasset Speedway. The new walls, catch fence, and other upgrades were well received by the crowd of nearly 2,000, but it was the new fan-friendly victory lane that was the hit of the day. Kids and grownups alike lined the waist high chain link fence in front of the grandstands to give high fives and handshakes to the drivers as they climbed out of their rides. Group 2 divisions were on the schedule including the Wood Pellet Warehouse Late Model Sportsman, Norm’s Used Cars Strictly Streets, and Kennebec Equipment Rental Outlaw Minis. The weekly Flex division race was the first of three appearances for the Wicked Good Vintage Racers.

300-LAP SCORE AT BEECH RIDGE IS SECOND STRAIGHT PASS SUPER LATE MODEL WIN FOR REID LANPHER

Scarborough, Maine – Reid Lanpher of Manchester backed up a career-first Pro All Stars Series victory the previous week at Oxford Plains Speedway with a dominant performance in Saturday’s 300-lap PASS National Championship Series Super Late Model race at Beech Ridge Motor Speedway in Scarborough, Maine.

Lanpher was chased across the finish line by the reigning Pro Series champion at Beech Ridge Motor Speedway, Curtis Gerry of Waterboro, who passed a fleet of racecars after a spin relegated him to the back of the pack midway through the marathon. Derek Ramstrom of West Boylston, Massachusetts claimed third-place honors, in front of Belfast racer Travis Benjamin and Turner’s Glen Luce.

REID LANPHER WINS SPEEDWAY HOMES 150 PRO ALL STARS SERIES RACE AT OXFORD PLAINS SPEEDWAY

Oxford, Maine – Reid Lanpher of Manchester earned a first-ever Pro All Stars Series Super Late Model win Sunday afternoon in the Speedway Homes 150 at Oxford Plains Speedway.

Lanpher won the first heat race to earn the first starting position in the lid lifter at the historic oval track on State Route 26, but it was no easy romp to the winner’s circle for the young racer, who swapped the lead with both Turner’s Glen Luce and Joey Polewarczyk, Jr. of Hudson, New Hampshire after a couple of restarts.

Polewarczyk, a multi-race PASS winner in part-time competition the previous season, looked trong once in front of the field, but about ten laps past the event’s halfway point, Polewarczyk’s race came to a smoky end with severe mechanical difficulties.  Lanpher reclaimed the lead and battled most of the rest of the distance with Luce, the 2015 Oxford 250 champion.

With Lanpher in command through the closing laps, 2016 Maritimes Pro Stock Champion Cole Butcher of Porters Lake, Nova Scotia finished off an impressive change from 26th starting position to claim runner-up honors.  Butcher looked strong running inside of outside of the competition in the stout, 40-car starting field.

OPENING DAY AT WISCASSET RAINED OUT

Wiscasset Speedway has had more than it’s share of good luck when it comes to weather over the past few years. As a matter of fact, the track hadn’t lost a full program to rain since June of 2014. The luck ran out Saturday afternoon as a cold steady mist hung over the region for much of the day, forcing track management to pull the plug, sending a group of hearty race fans and drivers home without the racing fix they had waited all winter to cure. “It’s frustrating,” said track announcer/promoter, Ken Minott. “The radar and forecast looked like we had a real window of opportunity. We wanted to get the race in as badly as they did.

We know our drivers want to race, so we make every effort to get the show in. This time it just didn’t happen”. Saturday’s show was meant to be the season opener for the 2017 season and the unveiling of the latest round of improvements to the facility, including a new wall in turns 3 & 4 and a new front stretch retaining wall and victory lane area. No makeup has been scheduled for Saturday’s rainout. The track will take another shot at opening it’s season Saturday, April 29th at 2:00 pm with Group 2, which includes The Wood Pellet Warehouse Late Model Sportsman; Midcoast Region Napa Modifieds; Kennebec Equipment Rental Outlaw Minis; and Norms Used Cars Strictly Streets. The flex division will be the Wicked Good Vintage Racers. Pit gates will open at 9:00am, Practice from 10:00a – 1:00p.
