2017 SEASON KICKS OFF THIS WEEKEND AT WISCASSET SPEEDWAY

by Ken Minott
Spring has finally taken hold in southern & central Maine, just in time for the start of the 2017 season at Wiscasset Speedway. As fans and drivers have come to expect the past few years, they’ll be greeted once again by several upgrades and changes to Maine’s fastest track. Most noticeably is the addition of a new retaining wall in turns 3 & 4, plus the long-awaited replacement of the aging front stretch wall. Final preparations are taking place in the days and hours leading up the season opener on Saturday, April 22nd at 2:00 pm. A new catch fence, flag stand, and Victory Lane area are also among the updates to the 3/8 mile oval. Under the nearly 5 year ownership of Richard & Vanessa Jordan, the coastal Maine speed plant has quickly turned into a popular destination for racers and fans from around the state.
One item that is unique to Wiscasset Speedway is the split of the eight weekly divisions into two distinct groups that run an alternating schedule from mid-April through early October. Group 1 will hit the track first this weekend with the Serv Pro of Biddeford-Saco Prostocks, Super Streets, Thunder 4 Minis, and 4-cylinder Pros. The weekly “Flex” division, typically reserved for regional touring divisions or specialty races, will be the first of 9 appearances for the Amsoil Nelcar Legends. Group 2, consisting of the Wood Pellet Warehouse Late Model Sportsman, Midcoast Region Napa Modifieds, Norms Used Cars Strictly Streets, and Kennebec Equipment Rental Outlaw Minis will kick off their season on April 29th.
Highlights of the upcoming 2017 season include the annual Coastal 200 on Memorial Day Weekend; the return of the NEMA Midgets & NEMA Lites; the 75 lap Outlaw Mini Madness; the 5th annual Top Gun Strictly Shootout; and a special double header weekend July 29th & 30th featuring the track’s 48th Birthday Celebration and the Boss Hogg 150 Prostock Open. Once again fans can see every race at Wiscasset Speedway for just $5 grandstand admission.

COLLINS SURVIVES LATE MODEL RACE TO SECURE DIVISION TITLE AT WISCASSET.

Wiscasset2013logo     A crisp fall evening greeted a large crowd at Maine’s Wiscasset Speedway Saturday night for the final points races of the 2015 season. Group 2 was in action with the championship title still up for grabs in the Late Model Sportsman division plus racing in the Modified and Outlaw Mini classes. Also on the schedule was an appearance of the Napa Super Streets, which normally run with Group 1, with its championship still to be determined. The Flex race of the program was the 3rd and final Enduro of the season. The Enduro rolled out 51 cars to take the green flag. Chad Michaud took the victory by 2 laps over Michael Moody and Keith Rankin.
The Modifieds rolled out for their 30 lap feature with Harpwell’s Mark Lucas having already secured the 2015 championship, thanks to his 10 wins in 11 races. The 11 car starting field as the largest for the mods this season. However a mishap in the front of the field on the initial green flag took a handful of cars out of contention including #15 Joe Williams, #33 Ron Bryant and #7 Nick Reno. With the race back underway #85 of Jairet Harrison took an early lead on lap 4 while Lucas picked his way up from the back of the field. Lucas reached the leader’s back bumper by lap 12 and would stay there for the next ten circuits. Harrison slipped up the track out of turn four and opened the lead up for Lucas. But just a lap later Lucas would be blackflagged for dumping water on the track. Harrison withstood one more restart challenge and drove to his first career win. He was chased across the line by Allen Moeller and Richard Jordan.
