DJ Shaw of Center Conway, New Hampshire drove from 19th starting position to victory lane in Saturday’s Southern Maine Motors 150 for Pro All Stars Series Super Late Models at Beech Ridge Motor Speedway in Scarborough, Maine.

Shaw methodically worked his way through a stellar field of contenders aboard his Precision JLM Ford, taking the lead away from Berwick, Maine’s Joey Doiron with about 30 laps remaining, then cruising to the checkered flag with relative ease once in command.

“It’s a good day for Dale Shaw Race Cars. First and second place,” said the winner, who builds, maintains and sets up race cars at the family business for a living.

Doiron, who took over the top spot in the Pro All Stars Series North Super Late Model championship points standings with his second straight runner-up finish, also led the most laps in race for the second consecutive time. After yielding the top spot to Shaw, Doiron held off certain Maine and New England Hall-of-Famer Mike Rowe of Turner, Maine to earn runner-up laurels.

Things are looking bright for the 2013 racing season and Canaan Fair Speedway’s in Canaan, New Hampshire. Driver entries have been pouring in for both the dirt and asphalt facilities and the car counts appear to be considerably larger than last years.

Some of the major changes for 2013 will be taking place on the NASCAR sanctioned oval as the elimination of both the Pro Stocks and Super Street classes allow a brand new Crate Modified class to come on board. Numbers in the new Mod class are certainly encouraging with numerous 2012 Canaan teams switching to the Modified class for 2013. Ken Cantlin, along with the father and son team of Walt Hammond, and Walter Hammond are just three of these drivers. Multiple drivers will be moving over to Canaan in many divisions since Twin State Speedway closed for 2013.

There’s some good news for the Modified competitors at Canaan Dirt Speedway. Management has put together a great plan to help out their teams for 2013. The purse in the Modified field has been changed so that every driver in the top twenty finishing position each week will receive at least $100.

“This is a major improvement for our teams as we know that economic times have got many teams pinching their pennies, and hopefully this will help ease their minds and allow them to continue to race the entire season,” stated General Manager, Dick Therrien. We are always looking for ways to help out our racers.”

Therrien went on, “We all know that one of the major expenses for all dirt teams is tires. We had a problem getting the Hoosier tire we wanted, so the supplier gave us a couple of other compound tires to test. We brought in one of our top racers to test out the tire this week and were we impressed.

Allen Hammond ran several segments and heat cycles on the tire. He started out running a ten-lap heat dash and everything went well. Next was a thirty lap non-stop run which showed virtually no wear. Three more twenty lap runs were made, and the tires still looked great! The track was hard and abrasive. But you could still hear the car squealing through the turns. This was a real legitimate test that worked out well.” (more…)
