The Lee USA Speedway opened its NASCAR Whelan Series regular season this past Friday night. Fans were treated to competitive racing action in all four divisions.
The big news in the Benson Hardware Small Block Super Modifieds was the driver change in the potent Witkum Brothers #21. Defending champion Tommy Tombarello Jr. will pilot the #21 for the 2013 season. Tombarello was without a ride until last Wednesday when asked to take over for Wayne Helliwell Jr., who could not run the entire season due to a schedule conflict.

Scarborough, ME – DJ Shaw of Center Conway, New Hampshire drove from 19th starting position to victory lane in Saturday’s Southern Maine Motors 150 for Pro All Stars Series Super Late Models at Beech Ridge Motor Speedway in Scarborough, Maine.
Shaw methodically worked his way through a stellar field of contenders aboard his Precision JLM Ford, taking the lead away from Berwick, Maine’s Joey Doiron with about 30 laps remaining, then cruising to the checkered flag with relative ease once in command.

THE STORY
FORT KENT, Maine – Austin Theriault of Fort Kent, Maine, returns to the seat of the Brad Keselowski Racing Super Late Model team this weekend for the Southern Super Series Racing Radios 125 at Gresham Motorsports Park in Jefferson, Ga., on Saturday, April 27. Theriault sits seventh in the Southern Super Series standings after a Top-10 finish in the series’ inaugural event at Fairgrounds Speedway Nashville earlier this month, and he’ll be making his third career appearance at Gresham Motorsports Park in the BKR No. 29 Checkered Flag Foundation Ford Fusion. Theriault finished fourth in the World Crown 300 – one of the four events nationally-recognized as part of Super Late Model racing’s “Grand Slam” – on the high-banked half-mile last July.

Oxford, ME – Joey Doiron was able to take his second place starting spot and dominate the season opener for the Pro All Stars Series North in the #73 Wild Willy’s Burgers Chevrolet on his way to an eventual second place finish at Oxford Plains Speedway. After winning the season opener a year ago at Beech Ridge, Doiron was confident he would have a car that could contend for another win after a great practice session in the morning.
It wasn’t long before Doiron got to show just how good of a car he had, as he took the win in the second heat race very convincingly. With that, he would start from the outside of the front row in the feature event, lined up alongside fellow Dale Shaw Racecars driver Brad Babb.

Wiscasset’s Kevin Sherman brings home the New England 4-Cylinder Prostock Win

Fans and racers alike gathered for another week of racing action at Wiscasset Speedway this past Saturday. The itinerary for the group one division of racing included Superstock, Prostock, New England 4-cylinder Prostock, Thunder 4’s, and the flex race of the week, Wicked Good Vintage Racers.
Up first was the twenty-five lap Superstock race. Corey Morgan- Lewiston, in the number 26, took the pole position. Morgan led early on, but Adam Chadbourne- Woolwich, squeezed by and took the lead. A battle ensued between Morgan and James Osmond- Wiscasset. Osmond held second place, but with seven laps to go, Morgan slid in and took the position away. Chadbourne took the win, Morgan placed second. Osmond finished in third.

THE STORY
NORWAY, Maine – Former track Rookie of the Year Chris Coolidge of Norway, Maine, plains to make his PASS North Series debut when the 2013 season opens with the Ripley & Fletcher Ford 150 at Oxford Plains Speedway in Oxford, Maine, on Sunday, April 21. Coolidge capped last season with a win in the final Late Model event in track history, and he begins his campaign in the new Pro Late Model division with the PASS North Series race scheduled for this weekend. Coolidge knows his way around Oxford Plains, as evidenced by his win in the season finale last September as well has his 2011 Rookie of the Year award. The Coolidge Motorsports No. 72 Bill’s Automotive/Lloyd’s Land Chevrolet by Crazy Horse Racing tested at the track last weekend in preparation for the season opener.
