FANS PACK THE STANDS FOR WISCASSET SPEEDWAY’S 45TH BIRTHDAY CELEBRATION

By Lisa Maguire

Wiscasset Speedway celebrated its forty-fifth birthday on Saturday. A ceremony during half time introduced some of Wiscasset’s great drivers from the past including Teddy Palino, Dick Giles, Dick Williams, Bill Bailey, JC Marsh, Dale Chadbourne, and Pete Silva. The weather was beautiful and sunny, and when the day cooled and evening came around the bright lights of Wiscasset lit the track. The grandstands were jammed with fans, and they enjoyed giveaways, fireworks, celebration cake, and some great racing action. On the schedule for the evening were Group One racing divisions, including Outlaw Mini’s, Prostocks, New England Four Cylinder Prostocks, and Napa Super Streets.

The spotlighted feature of the week was a thirty-five lap Napa Super Street race. Starting on the pole was the #1 of Adam Chadbourne. Last time out on the track, Chadbourne flipped his car coming out of turn four, landing upside down against the front wall, due to a broken tie rod end. Chadbourne said prior to race time it had taken two weeks to repair the damage with crews working around the clock. The whole front end was rebuilt, and a new engine was installed.

Oxford, ME – Joey Doiron and the #73 Wild Willy’s Burgers/JBJ Machine team were fresh of a win in the last Pro All Stars Series event at Beech Ridge Motor Speedway going into their biggest race of the season. The team had another strong outing in the biggest short track race in the country, the Oxford 250. Doiron lead over 70 laps early on, and was in contention for the win late in the race when with ten laps to go, he suffered an engine issue that he was forced to ride out with, finishing the 250 lap race in 11th place.

“It’s really disappointing to have it finish that way for us,” Doiron said after the race, “We got caught behind a little bit under the long green flag run, but we played the right strategy and I think we would have been on the podium again this year, but it just wasn’t meant to be. I’m still really proud of my team, they did a great job all weekend.”

Oxford, ME – DJ Shaw and the #60 Precision JLM Racing team have had a very successful 2014 season, one of Shaw’s best to date. One race missing from his resume however, is the prestigious Oxford 250 at Oxford Plains Speedway is. This year, Shaw’s team went into the race hoping to bounce back from a disappointing night at Beech Ridge Motor Speedway two weeks ago when they had a shock go bad. In the end, Shaw played his pit strategy to be in position for the win late, but couldn’t hold off the teams with fresher tires at the end and ended up with a 12th place effort in the 44 car field.

“We just fought the handle on the car all day for some reason,” Shaw said of the day, “We made our pit stop early to get on a different strategy as the front runners and it almost worked for us, we were there at the end and that’s all we can really ask for, my team did a great job all day and I’m proud of the effort.”
