Welch Wins Final Canaan Race, Crazy Horse Cars Fast At NHMS

SOUTH PARIS, Maine – Don Wentworth of Otisfield, Maine, is a veteran stock car driver who won’t quibble with one inevitable truth in short-track racing: It’s better to finish strong than it is to sputter to the finish line and spend all winter trying to figure out what went wrong.

Wentworth made sure he put a solid capper on the 2013 season at Oxford Plains Speedway in Oxford, Maine, posting a pair of podium finishes in the final two events of the inaugural Pro Late Model season at the track. Wentworth won the 40-lap feature at Oxford on August 30.

ROBBINS CLINCHES FIRST LATE MODEL WIN OF THE SEASON AT WISCASSET

Wiscasset2013logoBy Lisa Maguire

Last Saturday at Wiscasset Speedway was a bit cloudy and overcast, but the races were completed before the rain began to fall. With the changing of the seasons, the bright lights illuminating the race track brightened earlier, and the weather cooled for some fabulous racing action. There were some new faces in Victory Lane as well. On the schedule was the group two line up of divisions: Strictly Street, Mini Trucks, Outlaw Mini, and Late Model Sportsman. The flex race of the week was a thirty lap Amsoil Nelcar Legends race.

In a quick, straightforward race, fifteen Strictly Street race cars participated in a twenty lap feature. In the pole position was Corey Morgan of the No. 26. Behind him were the No. 1 of Mike Moody and the No. 5 of Guy Childs. It was not until lap three when the top three saw a leader change. Coming out of turn four Childs attempted to pass Moody on the inside. Childs and Moody scraped together, causing Childs to spin on the front stretch. While Moody recovered, the No. 43 of Ben Erskine moved to the outside and passed Moody on the front stretch. Moody moved to third.

RAINS AGAIN CURTAIL SPEEDWAY 95 PROGRAM for September 7

For the second week in a row, rain forced Speedway 95 officials to cut the program short before all scheduled racing was completed for the night. John Kalel II of Orrington won the Dysart’s Late Model feature postponed from last week by about a foot over defending champion Andy Saunders of Ellsworth. Kalel led every lap of the event from the pole to the checkers, but Saunders made a steady run from his mid pack starting spot, putting his car in the second spot on lap 22 of the 40 lap event after a lengthy battle for the position with Duane Seekins of Stockton Springs. After finally passing Seekins, Saunders steadily gained ground on Kalel, catching him as the two to go sign was shown by the flagman, Saunders was beside Kalel when the white flag flew, but Kalel hung on to his lead and beat Saunders to the checkers by a nose. Saunders finished second with Seekins finishing third. Rookie Andrew McLaughlin of Harrington took the fourth spot with Steuben’s Brenton Parritt finishing fifth.
