(Stafford Springs, CT)—Stafford Motor Speedway is hosting a field of accomplished current and former open wheel championship winning drivers for this year’s 4th annual Champions for Charities event, which will take place on Friday, June 27th. In the upcoming weeks before the event, SMS will provide a profile on each of the championship drivers. This week, the spotlight is on Woody Pitkat, the 2006 NASCAR Whelen All-American Series Division 4 Regional Champion, and 2013 Stafford SK Modified® Champion. Pitkat will be racing for the NAPA Intrepid Fallen Heroes Fund.
The Intrepid Fallen Heroes Fund serves United States Military personnel who are wounded or injured during their service. NAPA Auto Parts has announced the launch of its “Get Back and Give Back” program in support of the Intrepid Fallen Heroes Fund. Throughout the month of July, NAPA customers will receive up to a $25 mail-in rebate for every battery, alternator, and starter they purchase, which they can donate all or a portion of to the Intrepid Fallen Heroes Fund. Additionally, NAPA will donate $1 to the Intrepid Fallen Heroes Fund for each redeemed rebate. Mike Alton driver of the #99 Legends car had a roller coaster of a ride this past weekend at New Hampshire Motor Speedway (NHMS) as the MOAT Mountain Legends Series returned to race a double header on the 1.6 mile road course. “Saturday started off not so great, rainy and wet for qualifying and, the feature, I did not have rain tires so I qualified poorly, and held on to a 7th place finish. I was very disappointed but glad I finished with the car in 1 piece. On Sunday we made some last minute changes to car and had one of my best races, came from the back to 3rd and moved into 2nd for points.”
One of the big obstacles in last weekend’s races was the rain. Unlike some racing series the MOAT Mountain Legends Series races rain or shine. The drivers change the set up in the race car and put on rain tires then head out on to the track to take the green flag. So how did the rain affect the #99 legend car, “A lot for me, I don’t have rain tires, and no rain driving experience, not a big fan of racing in the rain so far.”

Wayne Helliwell, Jr. Wheels His Way to Merchants Bank Win
Barre, VT – Wayne Helliwell, Jr. of Dover, NH used a cross over move on Jimmy Hebert with about 15 laps to go to claim his first career Thunder Road win in the 16th annual Merchants Bank 150 on Sunday, April 27. Hebert held on for second while 17 year old Emily Packard came home third.
Hebert led for the majority of the event after taking the lead on lap 26 from his third place starting position. He held off two former Thunder Road Late Model Champions in Nick Sweet and Derrick O’Donnell in a fierce battle, while protecting the low lane. With just under 20 laps to go, Sweet and O’Donnell made hard contact on the backstretch, bringing out the ninth caution of the event. Sweet would be done to the day with front end damage, while O’Donnell returned after changing a flat.

Eddie MacDonald
The rain-delayed NASCAR K&N Pro Series East’s Blue Ox 100 at Richmond International Raceway took the green flag on Saturday morning with Eddie MacDonald starting in the 11th position after a solid qualifying run on Friday morning. The 100 lap event originally scheduled for a 9:40 p.m. Friday start after the Nationwide race, moved to Saturday morning after a three hour rain delay caused the re-schedule. However, a leaking rear seal late in the race forced Eddie Mac to the pits with eleven laps remaining to post a 27th place finish.
“We definitely struggled in practice both Thursday and Friday morning so having the rear seal leak was the final icing on the cake,” said the frustrated driver after the race. “The car was tight in the corners from the time we unloaded and the tires would just chatter when I got back to the throttle. The nose would just wash up and I didn’t have any forward bite coming off the corners. We thought we improved when we ran a pretty good lap in qualifying but it just didn’t last in the race.”

This past weekend the MOAT Mountain Legends returned to NHMS to race on the 1.6 mile road course. Alex Vorrilas was last season’s rookie of the year qualified 3rd for the feature with a lap time of 1:24.034. “I’m not sure how the racing was because we didn’t do any wheel to wheel racing. Last weekend at NHMS was a pretty typical weekend for us. It seems like we either break or get on the podium, and we started off the season right back on that path for 2014. It’s discouraging to say the least. Our goal for the first race weekend was just to finish, because with no drops this season is all about consistency. Unfortunately the axle broke on the formation lap, and we were unable to even start the race. Things break, and unfortunately in motorsports it happens a lot. The car is already fixed and back together, but this is an opportunity to take a break from the roller coaster ride we have had the past season into this season and see where we want to go from here.”
