Nine year old Ivan Kaffel, of Raymond, Maine is one of the drivers in the sportsman series at Richmond Karting Speedway (RKS).
RKS is one of the few kart tracks in New England that lets the drivers race either a rocker or a champ roll cage. I asked Ivan which he preferred to use his response was, “Champ because you can race them anywhere and I want to race a modified someday which are open wheels.” The major difference between the two are is Rocker cages move and are bolted on, where as Champs are welded on, built at the factory as a single unit. Could the Pro Stocks be making a comeback in New England? Consider the fact that last Saturday night the PASS Tour, based in Maine, managed to bring to Seekonk Speedway some 27 entries for their annual appearance at the Cement Palace. The teams came from New Brunswick, Maine, New Hampshire and Quebec to challenge the dominant Pro Stock drivers from Massachusetts and Rhode Island. Last month the PASS Tour was able to muster another good field the night before the TD Bank Oxford 250 at the Oxford Plains Speedway. All that in spite of high fuel prices! No doubt the $20,000 purse posted by Seekonk Speedway had a lot to do with motivating those North Country and Canadian drivers to make the long trip south.
Lee, NH – Lee USA Speedway played host to the annual David’s Race Cars and Components Hobby Stock Shootout 50-lapper on Friday night, with Groton, MA racer Geoff Rollins outrunning the biggest field of the season to collect the win.
