BARRE, VT – Persistent rain showers forced the Calkins Portables\/WDEV Radio event at Barre’s Thunder Road to be cut short on Thursday night. Following a one-hour delay for a deluge of rain early in the program, qualifying rounds were completed for all divisions. A second rain shower moved into the area as the Calkins\/WDEV “Port-A-Potty Grand Prix” was about to begin.<\/p>\n

One event was completed before the rains came; Barre City Mayor Thom Lauzon defeated Montpelier Mayor Mary Hooper in the “Twin City Showdown” after controversial contact on the race track sent Hooper spinning out of control. Lauzon credited his victory in the winner’s circle to the fact that Hooper “can’t drive.” Hooper, obviously in disagreement, protested Lauzon’s win.<\/p>\n
Brooks Clark of Fayston, Jeffersonville’s Joe Becker, and Mike Bailey of South Barre won Late Model division qualifying heats, while Becker won the bonus-points semi-feature. Dan Reed of Essex Junction, Bradford’s Derrick O’Donnell, and Barre driver Josh Lovely won NAPA Tiger Sportsman qualifying heats. Tim Potter of Plainfield won the consolation race, while Alex Perkins of Chelsea won the last-chance “B” Feature. Barre’s Josh LaCourse and Elmore rookie David Whitcomb won Allen Lumber Street Stock
qualifiers, while Jeremy Fleury of Williamstown and Neal Foster of Waterbury won Power Shift Online Junkyard Warrior heats.<\/p>\n
The Calkins\/WDEV Feature races and the Port-A-Potty Grand Prix will be made up in the coming weeks. Details will be announced shortly. Thunder Road is back in action on Thursday, August 7 with the NAPA Auto Parts\/Make-A-Wish event. General admission is $9.50 for adults, $3 for children (6-12), and just $20 for a family of four.
