{"id":14730,"date":"2015-05-12T10:50:57","date_gmt":"2015-05-12T14:50:57","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.maineracing.com\/wp\/?p=14730"},"modified":"2015-05-12T10:50:57","modified_gmt":"2015-05-12T14:50:57","slug":"erskine-captures-first-late-model-win-of-season","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/maineracing.com\/legacy\/2015\/05\/erskine-captures-first-late-model-win-of-season\/","title":{"rendered":"ERSKINE CAPTURES FIRST LATE MODEL WIN OF SEASON"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"attachment_14731\" style=\"width: 310px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-14731\" class=\"size-full wp-image-14731\" src=\"http:\/\/www.maineracing.com\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/05\/StStTop3-e1431442208284.jpg\" alt=\"Photo by Peter Taylor\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-14731\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Photo by Peter Taylor<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Despite a coolness to the air, fans gathered last Saturday at Wiscasset Speedway to watch the group two division of racing.\u00a0 On the agenda was the Spotlighted division, Modifieds, as well as Strictly Street, Late Model Sportsman, Outlaw Mini\u2019s, and the flex race of the week, a one hundred lap Enduro.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>First on the track were the Modifieds, competing in a forty lap spotlight feature.\u00a0 Starting at the pole was the #39 of Mike Brown.\u00a0 Behind him were the #61 of Shawn Austin and Jairet Harrison of the #85.\u00a0 When green flag racing began, the #20 of Gary Thorne leapt to the forefront.\u00a0 Thorne took second by the completion of lap one.\u00a0 Nipping at Thorne\u2019s heels was Mark Lucas of the #5.\u00a0 Lucas followed Thorne to the front of the pack, and by lap five, Thorne was leading the race, with Austin in second, and Lucas in third.<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p>There was a caution during lap five when the #7 of Steve Reno hit the front stretch tire wall.\u00a0 On the ensuing restart, Lucas was able to stay on the bottom of the track and pass Austin for second.\u00a0 Lucas looked for an opportunity to take the lead.\u00a0 His chance came during lap eight, when he was able to get underneath Thorne.\u00a0 However, the pair made contact coming out of turn three and Thorne spun, bringing out the caution.\u00a0 Lucas invoked the \u201cGentleman\u2019s Rule\u201d.\u00a0 Lucas said he was to blame in the incident, and Lucas went to the back. Thorne kept his positon.\u00a0 Austin moved back to second, and Harrison moved to third.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Lucas did not stay at the back for long.\u00a0 He moved through lap traffic, passing Harrison on the outside of the back stretch during lap eleven for third.\u00a0 Then, during lap thirteen, Lucas passed Austin for second.\u00a0 Lucas patiently waited for Thorne to make a misstep, so he could challenge for the lead.\u00a0 There was no error made by Thorne; however, there was a caution during lap twenty eight. On the restart, Lucas got a good jump off the start, and Lucas took the lead. Thorne\u2019s car got loose, and he was unable to overtake Lucas.\u00a0 Harrison was able to pass Austin for third on the restart.\u00a0 Lucas took the win.\u00a0 Thorne placed second.\u00a0 Harrison rounded out the top three in third.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>In Victory Lane, Thorne said, \u201cI didn\u2019t need that caution.\u00a0 You get one when you don\u2019t need it, and you don\u2019t get one when you do!\u201d<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Lucas said post-race \u201cI was glad to get back to the front. But, I still wanted to be sure Gary had a sporting chance.\u00a0 I didn\u2019t want him to have to go to the rear because of our contact at the beginning of the race.\u00a0 So, I invoked the Gentleman\u2019s Rule.\u00a0 I would have said he (Thorne) would have had it without the caution at the end, because I couldn\u2019t catch him.\u00a0 He\u2019s pretty fast.\u00a0 It was pretty fun.\u00a0 I want to thank Lucas Auto Repair, Dallas Staples Excavation, and Fishing vessel Mamiluem.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>A twenty-five lap Strictly Street feature was the next crowd pleaser.\u00a0 The #14 of Dave Brannon led the pack at the pole.\u00a0 Behind were the #51X of Bryan Robbins and Chanler Harrison of the #85.\u00a0 There were five cautions during the first three laps.\u00a0 Notably, a caution after Corey Morgan of the #26 passed Harrison coming out of turn three during lap three.\u00a0 Harrison spun on the track, and that caught up the #55H of Kurt Hewins, the #83 of Dan Brown, and the #84 of Kenny Harrison. After the fifth caution, race officials then called for a single file restart.\u00a0 The restart went smoothly, and when the dust had settled, the #51 of Kyle Hewins was in first, Morgan was in second, and Brannon was in third.\u00a0 There were no additional cautions throughout the race.<\/p>\n<p>Prior to race time, Morgan said he had changed numerous things on his car, especially on the set up of the front end.\u00a0 These changes paid off for Morgan, as during lap nine Morgan headed to the outside and passed Kyle Hewins for the lead on turn four.\u00a0 Brannon fell back after a near jumble on the track, and by lap fourteen, the #1 of Billy Childs had secured third.\u00a0 At race end, Morgan took the win.\u00a0 Kyle Hewins placed second.\u00a0 Childs placed third.<\/p>\n<p>After the race, Morgan said, \u201cI am lucky.\u00a0 I didn\u2019t think I was going to get from the back to the front, but, it was so rough at beginning of race.\u00a0 Everyone got stove up, and I ended up at the front.\u00a0 I was following two guys who were going to the same place, but they got tied up, and there I was.\u00a0 I want to thank my sponsor, Nicely Built Race Engines.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>A thirty five lap Late Model Sportsman feature was action packed.\u00a0 Fans cheered as twenty-two late model sportsman cars raced furiously under the bright lights of Wiscasset.\u00a0 Starting at the pole was the #6 of Chris Bowie.\u00a0 The #21 of Shane Clark and the #33 of Josh St Clair were behind him.\u00a0 During lap three, Josh St Clair pulled ahead of Clark on turn three for second.<\/p>\n<p>Coming up from his ninth place start was the #15 of Nick Hinkley, who was in fourth place by lap ten.\u00a0 There was a caution during lap twelve, and on the restart, Josh St Clair and Bowie battled for the lead, while behind them Clark and Hinkley raced door to door for the third spot.\u00a0 Hinkley pulled ahead by a nose, but coming out of turn two, Clark and Hinkley made contact.\u00a0 Hinkley spun on the track, bringing out the caution.\u00a0 Clark invoked the \u201cGentleman\u2019s Rule\u201d.\u00a0 Hinkley maintained his track position, but Clark went to back of the pack.\u00a0 Hinkley moved to third.<\/p>\n<p>When racing action resumed, Bowie took the lead.\u00a0 Hinkley and Josh St Clair battled for second.\u00a0 During lap fourteen, Hinkley pulled ahead for second.\u00a0 Moving up from his sixteenth place start was the #26 of Andrew McLaughlin.\u00a0 McLaughlin clinched the fourth spot by lap sixteen.\u00a0 A caution during lap twenty-two caused another restart. Bowie and Hinkley raced side by side for the lead, while Josh St Clair and McLaughlin raced door to door for third.\u00a0 Bowie pulled ahead and secured his lead, and Hinkley fell to second.<\/p>\n<p>During lap twenty-eight everything changed when Hinkley made contact with Bowie coming out turn four onto the front stretch.\u00a0 This caused a chain reaction as Bowie spun.\u00a0 Josh St Clair and McLaughlin checked up and Josh St Clair hit the wall coming out of turn one.\u00a0 McLaughlin lost his forward momentum and became part of the caution that was thrown.\u00a0 Hinkley invoked the \u201cGentleman\u2019s Rule\u201d, and went to the back of the field.\u00a0 McLaughlin also went to the back.\u00a0 Bowie headed to the pits, so lost his position on the track.\u00a0 Josh St Clair needed to be towed to the pits.\u00a0 The #4 of Ben Erskine moved to first place.\u00a0 The #30 of Ryan St Clair moved to second.\u00a0 Moving to third was the #14 of Dave St Clair.\u00a0 Race leaders then remained constant until the conclusion of the race.\u00a0 Erskine took the checkered.\u00a0 Ryan St Clair took second.\u00a0 Dave St Clair placed third.<\/p>\n<p>Post-race, Erskine said, \u201cThis was an awesome race.\u00a0 This car I have is awesome!\u00a0 This was a very emotional win for me, and I had a hard time to keep it together!\u00a0 The race was good and I had a great car.\u00a0 I saved my tires until that last restart, and then I ran hard.\u00a0 I would like to thank my crew, wife, and mom and dad.\u00a0 I need to thank my sponsors, Erskine Trucking, Pitcher Perfect Tire, and Rob Elliott Trucking, also my mother and father in-law.\u00a0 It was a great night!\u201d<\/p>\n<p>A twenty-five lap Outlaw Mini race was shortened to fifteen laps after the racing field was narrowed to three cars.\u00a0\u00a0 Starting on the pole was the #5 of Jimmy Childs.\u00a0 Behind him were the #13 of Nate Tribett and the #34 of Justin Trombley.\u00a0 Lap two saw Trombley edge ahead of Tribett by a nose for second.\u00a0 Then, during lap ten, Trombley spun Childs on turn two and Childs went into the infield.\u00a0 Both cars went to the back.<\/p>\n<p>Tribett moved to first and the #9 of George Fortin moved to second.\u00a0 Childs moved to third.\u00a0 On the ensuing restart, a mechanical issue caused Fortin to slam into the front stretch wall.\u00a0 Another caution was called and this was when race officials shortened the race by ten laps.\u00a0 Tribbet moved to first, Childs to second, Trombley to third.\u00a0 Off the start, Trombley took second away from Childs.\u00a0 Tribbet took first.\u00a0 Trombley placed second.\u00a0 Childs rounded out the top three in third.<\/p>\n<p>After the race, Tribett said, \u201cIt was fun, there weren\u2019t many cars, but it was fun. I want to thank my grandfather and my uncle for the car going the way it does.\u00a0 I want to thank Main Street Fuel and KNG Auto Sales, my sponsors.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The flex race of the week was a one hundred lap Enduro feature.\u00a0 Twenty-four Enduro cars hit the racetrack in heated competition til the finish.\u00a0 Early race leaders were the #98 of Kamren Knowles, the #55 of Larry Marshall, and the #181 of Bryan Lancaster.<\/p>\n<p>Emerging from the pack as a solid contender was the #42 of Frank Brown.\u00a0 Brown secured the lead by lap twenty, and led the remainder of the race.\u00a0 A close second was Lancaster.\u00a0 Lancaster secured second place by lap twenty and remained in second throughout the race.\u00a0 The #22 of Scott Eck, and the #98 of Kamren Knowles battled for third position.\u00a0 Ultimately, Eck emerged triumphant, with Knowles moving down to fifth place.\u00a0 Finishing in fourth was the #68 of Jeff Minchin Jr, who passed Knowles during the next to last lap, securing his finish.\u00a0 Brown took the checkered.\u00a0 Lancaster placed second.\u00a0 Eck placed third.<\/p>\n<p>Wiscasset Speedway resumes racing action, <span data-term=\"goog_1472424440\">May 16, 2015<\/span> with its group one lineup of divisions: Prostock, Napa Super Street, Thunder 4\u2019s, and New England Four Cylinder Prostock.\u00a0 The flex race of the week are the Amsoil Nelcar Legends.\u00a0 Pit gates open at <span data-term=\"goog_1472424441\">2:00 PM<\/span>.\u00a0 Grandstand gates open at <span data-term=\"goog_1472424442\">4:00 PM<\/span>.\u00a0 Racing begins at <span data-term=\"goog_1472424443\">6:00 PM<\/span>.\u00a0 Admission is $5.00 for adults and children aged seven and older.\u00a0 Kids six and under are free.\u00a0 Pit admission is $20.00.\u00a0\u00a0 Next week is Mainely Motorsports night.\u00a0 Host Steve Perry will be there to greet fans, give away prizes, and make it a fun night for all.\u00a0 Additionally,
