He returned home on Aug. 24, where he has been receiving treatments since.<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><br \/>\n\u201cIt\u2019s pretty discouraging,\u201d Fernald said on Tuesday morning, announcing the cancellation of this weekend\u2019s racing.<br \/>\nUnity Raceway will hold its next scheduled event on\u00a0<span class=\"aBn\" tabindex=\"0\" data-term=\"goog_1355798059\"><span class=\"aQJ\">Sunday, September 24<\/span><\/span>, at\u00a0<span class=\"aBn\" tabindex=\"0\" data-term=\"goog_1355798060\"><span class=\"aQJ\">1:30 p.m.<\/span><\/span>\u00a0\u2014 including Wildcat, 6-Shooter, Flyin\u2019 4, Enduro and Wicked Good Vintage Racers divisions.<\/p>\n<p>Doctors expect a recovery time of six to eight weeks for Fernald, who remains extremely sensitive to light, noise and physical stressors as a result of the illness in his nervous system. He spent nearly a week receiving intravenous fluids at home, where he remains resting for more than 20 hours per day.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAs much as he loves the place, he\u2019s been told that he has to avoid stress while he recovers,\u201d Fernald\u2019s wife, Sherry, said. \u201cHe could have a relapse, and we obviously can\u2019t have that.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Following the event on\u00a0<span class=\"aBn\" tabindex=\"0\" data-term=\"goog_1355798061\"><span class=\"aQJ\">Sept. 24<\/span><\/span>, Unity Raceway will close its season \u2014 its final season of asphalt racing \u2014 with the annual Long John Weekend,\u00a0<span class=\"aBn\" tabindex=\"0\" data-term=\"goog_1355798062\"><span class=\"aQJ\">Oct. 21-22<\/span><\/span>, capped by a 117-lap Late Model feature event.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The Unity Raceway racing program schedule for this\u00a0Sunday, September 10, has been canceled out of concerns for track owner George Fernald\u2019s health.
