Granite State Pro Stocks Headed For Inaugural Visit at Riverhead Raceway

graphic_GSPSSRIVERHEAD, N.Y. — This Saturday, July 30, the Granite State Pro Stock Series (GSPSS) visits Riverhead Raceway in Long Island, New York for the inaugural Riverhead 100.

The $2,000 to win feature event is set to be a battle between the stars of the GSPSS who run with the tour regularly up against those who compete in the Late Model class at Riverhead as part of the NASCAR Whelen All-American Series.

Series points leader Barry Gray leads the way into the 1/4 mile bullring — but he is closely followed by Cory Casagrande — who has come on strong of late. Casagrande says he may be at an advantage over some of the rest of the field when they roll onto the track on Saturday, since he has been at the track and watched racing action before.

After five races in the 2016 Granite State Pro Stock Series campaign, Cory Casagrande sits second in the points standings.

Casagrande is a native of Stafford Springs, Connecticut and drives the No. 1 Shark Cycles, Casagrande Builders Chevrolet at each of the races on the GSPSS schedule. So far in 2016, the season has had its ups and downs, but Casagrande sits second in the point standings going into the second half of the season.

“I think from last year to this year, we are 100% better,” Casagrande said. “I’ve been pretty happy with this season so far, we have had a couple of tough races but we’ve also had some top-fives and those are good to have. We’re going to a new track for basically everyone next in Riverhead, I’m probably one of the few people that run the tour that has even been there to watch a race, so I’m looking forward to going back there.

WALPOLE, N.H. __ Through four races of the Granite State Pro Stock Series (GSPSS) slate in 2016, four different winners have carried the checkered flag and there has been some top-notch racing in each event.

It was Jacob Dore winning a thrilling battle to open the season at White Mt. Motorsports Park and he was followed by Mike O’Sullvain, who took the checkers at Monadnock Speedway.

O’Sullivan picked up a crucial win in a guaranteed qualifier event for the Seekonk Speedway Pro Stock 200 coming up on July 13. He will be just one of the names representing the GSPSS at Seekonk that Wednesday night.

Veteran Pro All Star Series driver DJ Shaw scored the victory at Lee USA and most recently, Jeremy Davis outdueled Derek Griffith and Shaw in the final laps to win the feature event at Claremont Speedway.

The Twin State 100 saw some new drivers on the roster adding to the variety seen in all of the GSPSS races started this year.  George Bessette of Danbury, CT., Tommy O’Sullivan, of Wilbraham, MA., and local racer Jimmy Zullo of Claremont, NH all added their names to the list of already competitive list of drivers running.

Last years winner Derek Griffith and newcomer to Claremont, DJ Shaw set the pace early in the day, both attaining 13.9 lap times in practice. Mike O’Sullivan of Springfield, MA. and Bill Ahern of Bellerica, MA. started on the front row. Guy Caron of Lempster, NH took an early lead, showing his knowledge of the track.  Griffith, Shaw, and Davis quickly made their way through the pack to the top five in the early laps of the race. Caron led for twenty-five laps until the first caution flew for Glenn Martel as he spun in turn two.

On the restart, Shaw took advantage of his position near the front, and captured the lead which he would hold for a total of sixty-six laps of the race. On lap forty-seven, hometown racer Jimmy Zullo found himself in the pit for the first time in the feature after he hit the front stretch wall in practice.  He continued to battle the car throughout the night. On lap fifty-five Cory Casagrande of Stafford Springs, CT and George Bessette of Danbury, CT made contact in turn four.

The Granite State Pro Stock Series (GSPSS) will return to the place where the series ran the inaugural race this Friday night, June 17.

The 1/3 mile Claremont Speedway located in Claremont, New Hampshire will be the site for the fourth GSPSS race of the season — the Twin State 100 — one that will pay $2,000 to the winner.

The first three of the season saw three different winners — Jacob Dore, Mike O’Sullivan & DJ Shaw — and there is no reason why a fourth different driver couldn’t sit in victory lane this Friday night.

WALPOLE, N.H. _ Though the Granite State Pro Stock Series (GSPSS) may have a field filled with veterans in 2016, two rookies have been tearing it up with some of the best Super Late Model talent so far.

Rookie of the Year contenders Mike Mitchell and Glenn Martel have had solid runs and their finishes thus far show they will be a threat to sit in victory lane before the season comes to a close.

Mitchell, who comes to the series as a former Street Stock champion and Pro Stock driver at Seekonk Speedway, has finished inside the top-10 in two of the three series events. He finished sixth at the opener at White Mt. Motorsports Park, then followed that up with a fourth place run at Monadnock Speedway.
