JIM BRAGDON WINS STRICTLY STREET SERIES EVENT AT SPEEDWAY 95

Jim Bragdon of Corinth made it two in a row in the Strictly Street division at Speedway 95 Saturday night after a race long battle with division points leader Alex Berry of Harrington, who finished a close second. Bragdon started on the outside pole of the Pine Tree Waste 35 lap series event, with Berry in the pole starting position after winning the evening’s qualifier. Bragdon took the early lead with Berry glued to his bumper. Following a lap 16 caution, Berry assumed the point, but the caution flew again on lap 18. On that restart, Berry and Bragdon raced side by side until Berry took the lead on lap 27. The caution flew again on lap 28 and again on lap 29 for solo spins by last year’s champion, Shelby Kimball of Cornville, who retired to the pit following the lap 29 caution. On the restart, Berry took the lead, but Bragdon stayed close on the outside and retook the lead on lap 33, holding Berry off until the checkered flag flew on lap 35. Berry finished in second with Jordan Pearson of Glenburn, recovering from a qualifying race wreck, finishing in third. Matt Kimball of Cornville finished fourth with Jeff Alley of Machias finishing in fifth.

BRENTON PARRITT WINS 95 LATE MODEL FEATURE

speedway 95Brenton Parritt of Steuben led all 50 laps of the Hopkins Landscaping and Paving Dysart’s Late Model feature Saturday night at Speedway 95, but the win was never assured until the checkered flag fell with Hermon’s Mike Hopkins right behind him all the way. Hopkins mounted a late race challenge in the closing laps, but was unable to unseat Parritt from the top spot. Hopkins finished in second with Wayne Parritt Jr. of Steuben fending off John Kalel II of Orrington to take third. Kalel finished fourth after coming from the rear of the field following a lap 16 spin in turn three that caused the race’s only caution. Last week’s winner, Andrew McLaughlin of Harrington, finished fifth. The race actually finished under the caution after Orrington’s Jim Robichaud spun in turn two after the white flag was shown to the leader. According to the rules, when that occurs, the race continues and the yellow and checkered flags are displayed when the field crosses the finish line. Rounding out the top ten were Milo’s Nick Jenkins, Lloyd Nickerson of E. Corinth, Dean Smart of Bradley, Hermon’s John Curtis Jr. and Dana Wilbur of Winterport, in that order.

BOSWORTH BROTHERS DOMINATE SPEEDWAY 95 SPORT-FOUR FEATURE

speedway 95Brad and Jayson Bosworth of Cornville led all 35 laps of the Coca Cola Company Sport-Four Series race #1 at Speedway 95 Saturday night, with a surprise twist at the end determining the winner. Brad Bosworth led the first 33 laps of the race with brother Jayson, Newburgh’s Darren Durrell, Milford’s Garett Hayman and Carmel’s Ted Ryder all fighting for positions two through five. When the third caution of the event stopped the action on lap 33 for a solo spin in turn one by Dixmont’s Lewis Batchelder, the Bosworths lined up on the front row for the restart and, when the green fell, Brad resumed his lead when Jayson missed a shift and fell to fifth by the time the field reached turn one.

As luck would have it for Jayson, the yellow flew again before the lap was complete when rookie Dylan Street of Old Town and Hermon’s Andrew Crosby tangled and spun in turn three while jockeying for the sixth spot. Because the lap was not completed, Jayson was placed back in the second position on the restart alongside brother Brad, who was still the leader. When the green flew, it was Brad’s turn to miss a shift, and Jayson assumed the lead which he held for the final two lap run to the checkers. Brad finished in second after a spirited battle with Darren Durrell for the spot. Durrell finished in third with Hayman finishing fourth after racing side by side with Ryder for the final laps with Ryder finishing fifth. Rounding out the top 10 in the 22 car field were Donny Silva of Hudson, Jeremy Scott of Carmel, Dennis and Becky Burns of Carmel , and Dixmont’s Lewis Batchelder. Heat race winners for the night were Jason Trundy of Winterport, Brad Bosworth and Jayson Bosworth.

DEAN SMART WINS 95 LATE MODEL FEATURE BY INCHES

Speedway 95Bradley’s Dean Smart started the 40 lap Dysart’s Late Model feature at Speedway 95 in fifth place on Saturday night and hung around the top five as John Curtis Jr. of Hermon, John Kalel II of Orrington and Ryan Deane of Winterport took turns trying to unseat leader Wayne Parritt of Steuben. In the reshuffle through three late race cautions, Smart moved through the field, using both the inside and outside grooves to position his car for the final assault. On a lap 33 restart, Smart lined up beside Parritt and battled him side by side for the final 7 laps. The pair exchanged the lead twice until the final lap when Smart crossed the finish line with the front bumper of his car mere inches ahead of Parritt. Parritt finished second after leading for 35 of the races 40 laps, with Ryan Deane a close third. Fourth went to Hermon’s John Curtis Jr., who lost an early race side by side battle with Parritt for the lead, and last week’s winner, Kalel II, finished in fifth. Parritt and Corinna’s Paul White were the heat race winners.

JOHN KALEL II TAKES SPEEDWAY 95 SEASON OPENER

speedway 95A good and enthusiastic opening day crowd at Speedway 95 watched what started as a runaway for Orrington’s John Kalel II turn into a spirited battle for the win in the Hopkins Landscaping and Paving 50 lap feature for the Dysart’s Late Models. The race went caution free for the first 30 laps, with Kalel opening up a straightaway lead after early challenger Wayne Parritt of Steuben had to give up his second place spot on lap 8 when a loose sway bar forced him to the pits. When the caution fell on lap 30 for a solo spin by Hermon’s Greg Ellis, who was running fourth at the time, the field was bunched up with Kalel maintaining his lead on the restart until the caution fell again on lap 41 for a solo spin in turn 1 by Orrington’s Jim Robichaud. On the restart, Winterport’s Ryan Deane took the point as Kalel fell back as far as third in the shuffle. Harrington’s Andrew McLaughlin showed he would be a force to be reckoned with this season as he wrestled the lead away from Deane and led for 2 laps until the caution fell again on lap 44 when rookie Bradley Smart of Bradley went off course in turn four. When the green fell again, it was Deane and Kalel battling for position that brought out the race’s final caution, when Deane spun off turn one. Kalel then outraced McLaughlin for the final 5 laps to post the win. McLaughlin finished second with Steuben’s Brenton Parritt coming from a 12th place start to finish third. Winterport’s Shane Clark, who ran in the top five all race finished fourth with Hermon’s John Curtis Jr. of Hermon finishing a strong fifth in the 15 car field. Parritt and Kalel each won a qualifier earlier in the evening.
