Barre, VT – Barre’s own Thunder Road International Speedbowl hits the home stretch for its 2014 season this Thursday, July 31 with WDEV/Calkins Portable Toilets night. Thursday night will close out the month of July leaving just four more Thursdays plus the Coca-Cola Labor Day Classic in August to decide the 2014 Late Model “King of the Road.”

Two-time Late Model Champion and 2014 Vermont Governor’s Cup winner Nick Sweet of Barre currently sits atop the standings by a slim three-point lead over another two-time “King of the Road” Dave Pembroke. Pembroke is looking toward this Thursday to claim his first win of the season and erase the three-point deficit. Defending Thunder Road track champion Derrick O’Donnell and this year’s Times-Argus Mid-Season Champion Trampas Demers ride just eight points behind Pembroke, while outstanding rookie driver Eric Badore holds the final top five spot.

There are race car drivers who make a lot of “noise” on the racetrack. The phrase “checkers or wreckers” comes to mind. Some are content with being a headline story after the race, even if it is because they wrecked in spectacular fashion while fighting for the lead.

Shawn Fleury is not that kind of driver.

Throughout his career, Fleury has made a name for himself by being a driver who uses his head as much as his hands and feet. With handicapping putting the good drivers at the back of the pack each week, it takes the right mix of patience and impatience to make it to the front by the end of the race. A driver who also works on the cars is more likely to pay attention to not wrecking the car while going through the field, as the driver knows full-well how much time and money are required to repair damaged racecars.

Lee USA Joey Ploe in Victory Lane

Durham, NH- Joey Polewarczyk, JR. used a two-lap shootout to best point leader Larry Gelinas en route to grabbing his second career victory in the Granite State Pro Stock Series (GSPSS).

Newcomer to the GSPSS Bobby Nadeau led the field to green with Marston Mills, MA native Billy Brady to his outside. Nadeau proved he had a fast car, jumping out to a quick lead. The advantage would be wiped away as the first of 6 cautions flew for Russ Hersey’s spin in turn 3 on lap 14. On the restart, Nadeau would drift wide and collect Brady on the backstretch, ending both driver’s nights early. Larry Gelinas would inherit the lead, and be faced with American-Canadian Tour point leader Joey Polewarczyk, JR. to his outside. Gelinas would show his strength, as the pilot of the Watt’s Race Cars Cadillac would pull away from Polewarczyk, JR. until a caution for Steve “Danger” Dickey would negate the lead on lap 49. Gelinas would fend off Polewarczyk, JR. once more, and set a blistering pace as the duo would put multiple cars a lap down.
