NEMST heads back into the Mountains

This Saturday will mark the second and final trip for the North East Mini Stock Tour to venture into Woodstock, NH at the lightning fast quarter mile White Mountain Motorsports Park. Rookie Chris McKInstry is heading in with the series point lead but long time competitor and 2009 NEMST Champion Emerson Cayer is hot on his shoes. McKinstry is 3 of 4 in NEMST races this year with his only loss coming at White Mountain on July 3rd.

As the points race is heating up so is NEMST interest among other drivers. This weekends race will be the first start for multiple drivers on the NEMST. The early summer winner Justin Trombley who finished second in overall points last year will not be making the 5 hour trek to White Mountain. Tour new comer Adam Polvinen has recovered from a hard wreck while leading at Wiscasset on August 8th and is heading into New Hampshire for his first time on the high banked track.

McKinstry Doubles Up With Closest Finish in NEMST History

Rookie Chris McKinstry of East Thetford, VT grabbed his second NEMST victory of the season in dramatic fashion by only 1 inch over Tim Boyle. McKinstry started deep in the field in 15th place but rallied to the front by lap 10.

Early race action saw Tim Collins lead the first lap but that was short lived as the flyin’ Scirocco of Loren Smith overtook Collins on lap 2 where he lead all the way until the halfway point of the event. On lap 8 McKinstry poked his Mustang out in front of all the other competitors to bring the field back around to the stripe. On lap 10 there was contact on the backstretch between Tim Boyle and Loren Smith, that sent Smith into the wall causing some suspension damage ending the night for the 41 car. On the restart McKinstry showed the way but Boyle was fighting hard on the outside and pulled even down every straightaway.

Rain washes out 24 car field at Unity

For the 4th time in 2 years an NEMST event is having to be rescheduled due to rain. Heavy rains in both attempts for a run at the challenging Unity Raceway were unsuccessful in 2009, and 2010 has not started any better. For the Saturday night event the forecast was at 80% rain and the event was postponed until Sunday afternoon.

The only benefit to the postponement was the number of additional cars that came out to run with the NEMST in its sophomore season. Twenty-four cars were on hand for the event and we had a very close field that was showcased throughout the three practice sessions. After practice was over and the draw for heat starting position was made it started to sprinkle light rain in the area which eventually picked up to a steady rain that had last well over an hour. During the aforementioned drivers meeting Bruce Knowles of Dover, NH took home the Tater’s NASCAR Merchandise $100 bonus. An additional $100 bonus will also be given away at the October make-up.

Unity Race Preview

The North East Mini Stock Tour is heading north for its first Maine race of the year at Unity Raceway. Last year we made two attempts at Unity, but rain washed those plans away both times. In the unfortunate chance that rain soaks the track on Saturday night the NEMST will be on hand for the rain date on Sunday with races starting at 2 P.M.!

The tour has been great so far year to date with Justin Trombley leading the point standings due to a 2nd place finish at Canaan and a win last weekend at White Mountain. With last years Champion Emerson Cayer sitting a little further back in the standings then he is accustomed to due to a blown radiator hose early in the race at White Mountain.
