After two consecutive runner-up finishes on American Canadian Tour Wayne Helliwell Jr. was not the bridesmaid in round three of the 2012 season. Dominating the second half of the FOX 101.5 Spring Green 112 to pick up his first ever series victory at Devils Bowl Speedway in West Haven Vermont.
The Bruce Bernhardt owned team rolled into the half mile Vermont Speedbowl hoping for a better result than their 2011 mud exploration off the backstretch; which involved ankle deep mud and a tractor to remove the car. They would not be disappointed. Using the +/- passing system Helliwell would finish fourth in his heat netting +4 to start the 112 lap event from the third starting position. “We had a really balanced car right off the trailer, said Wayne. We made minimal changes throughout the day.”

The Benjamin Motorsports team started the 2012 season at Beech Ridge this past Saturday. After practice was cancelled on Friday, that kinda put the team a little behind the eight ball but after practice on Saturday morning the team was confident that they could have a good race.
Starting in the fifth position in the qualifying race and finishing second in just fifteen laps the team knew they were good to run in the top ten but didn’t feel they had a car capable of winning so a few adjustments were made after the qualifying race. (more…)

Hermon’s Mike Hopkins made it two for two for 2012 in the Speedway 95 Dysart’s Late Models Saturday night when he went from the outside pole to victory lane in the caution free Sinclair Towing Service 50 lap feature event. Ryan Deane of Winterport started on the pole but was no match for Hopkins, who had the lead coming out of turn two on the first lap. Andy Saunders of Ellsworth wasted no time getting past Deane as he quickly moved into the second spot, but that’s as far as he could go. Saunders, and Deane who finished third, went the entire 50 laps nose to tail, but no change in the running order was ever made. Brenton Parritt of Steuben moved through the pack and finished in the fourth spot with Winterport’s Shane Clark finishing fifth. Duane Seekins of Stockton Springs finished sixth, the last car on the lead lap at the finish. Hermon’s Greg Ellis, Deane Smart of Milford, John Kalel II of Orrington and Dale Swoboda of Hermon, rounded out the top ten. Fifteen Late Models took the green flag for the race, with only Hermon’s Phil Richardson falling out and not completing the entire distance. Hopkins and Deane won the qualifiers, placing them on the front row for the start.

Lonnie Sommerville of Saint John, New Brunswick, started the 2012 PASS North Series season off on the right foot by finishing second in the SouthernMaineMotors.com 150 at Beech Ridge Motor Speedway in Scarborough, Maine, on Saturday, May 5. The result marked Sommerville’s fourth straight Top-5 finish at Beech Ridge in the Mulkern Racing No. 48 A.E. McKay Builders Chevrolet dating back to this event last season. Sommerville led on two different occasions early in the race after starting fourth in the 32-car field, but a long green-flag run to the checkered flag kept him just short of the top spot at the finish line.
