Although he’s been atop the Dysart’s Late Model points chart for most of the 2012 season, it took Andy Saunders of Ellsworth until this past Saturday night to finally post a feature race win in the track’s premier division. Saunders started the race in the fifth spot in the 17 car field, and it took him until a restart on lap 26 before he could pass Milford’s Deane Smart to take the lead. Smart had led the event for most of the first 26 laps, losing it for only a lap at a time through close competition from Duane Seekins of Stockton Springs and Hermon’s Phil Richardson, who took turns challenging Smart for the top spot. Smart fought them both off, but didn’t have enough left at the end to keep Saunders from taking the win. Smart finished second with Seekins in third. Fourth went to Joey Doyon of Winterport with Hermon’s Dale Swoboda finishing fifth.

Garett Hayman of Milford led all 25 laps of the Little Enduro Series race #3 on Varney Buick-GMC-Mazda’s Wacky Wednesday night at Speedway and, in the process, picked up the series points title with a perfect score of 300. Hayman won the evening’s first qualifier, which placed him on the pole for the main event. He led outside pole-sitter Jeremy Scott of Carmel, who won the second qualifier, for 23 laps until the red came out for a solo spin by Glenburn’s Emma Libby in turn 2. On the restart, Hayman again pulled away from Scott, but Newburgh’s Darren Durrell got in the gas hard and followed Hayman past Scott to finish second, with Scott finishing in third. Kyle Gallant, who battled with Durrell for most of the race finished in fourth with Donny Silva of Hudson finishing fifth in a borrowed car. Hayman also currently leads the Little Enduro season points with 2 race dates remaining in the season.

The dismal skies and occasional rain on Saturday forced Speedway 95 officials to cancel the racing program scheduled for Saturday night. Owner Del Merritt said the 50 lap Gardner Construction Enterprises series race for the Sportsman cars will be run Saturday night August 18 along with the 35 lap Strictly Street Pepsi Beverage Company series race scheduled for that night. Merritt also announced that the racing season will be extended two weeks to compensate for the two race dates rained out this season. Racing will be scheduled for Saturday September 29 and Saturday, October 6, with a 5 p.m. start time for both nights. Merritt added that the regular points races would end on September 22 as scheduled, and most likely some special events will be scheduled for the added dates.

Bob Seger Jr. of Frankfort won the Big Enduro feature Wednesday night and made it three for three in the Big Enduro Series at Speedway 95 this summer as he won all three qualifiers and features in the series, ending with a perfect 300 points. Alvin MacNevin of Clifton gave chase to Seger in the series finale but was only able to get as close as Seger would let him get in the closing laps. MacNevin finished second with his brother, Shawn MacNevin of Hudson finishing third after a race long battle with Shawn Racilla of Dover-Foxcroft for the position. Racilla finished fourth with Melanie Mitchell of Milo finishing fifth.
In the Little Enduros, Darren Durrell of Newburgh took the lead from Andrew Crosby of Hermon on a lap 11 restart and held on for the win after working his way up from the rear of the field at the start. Crosby hung on to second with Milford’s Garett Hayman right on his bumper to finish third. Kyle Gallant of Veazie fell to fourth in the late stages of the event, and Charles McKusic of Abbott finished fifth.

Despite having 100 pounds added to his car in the interest of competition, having a distributor break in his qualifying race and starting 18th in a 20 car field of Dysart’s Late Models, Mike Hopkins of Hermon methodically worked his way up through the field and, with the aid of 5 caution flags closing the field up, took the lead for good from Ellsworth’s Andy Saunders on a lap 37 restart and led the final 13 laps to win the 50 lap Sinclair Towing Service series event. Andy Saunders of Ellsworth finished in the second spot after leading for 23 laps until Hopkins took the top spot away in the closing laps. Brenton Parritt of Steuben finished in third with Dean Smart of Bradley running a strong race to finish fourth. Phil Richardson of Hermon challenged Smart for the position over the final five laps, but Smart was strong enough to relegate Richardson to fifth place finish. Travis Beale of Hampden took the lead on lap one of the 1st annual Chummy’s Groundhog Special for Little Enduros at Speedway 95 Wednesday night and led all the way in the caution free 50 lap event. Beale was never seriously challenged although Fred Ashmore Jr. of Hancock was closing in on the leader when the checkers came out. Ashmore, who started fifth had worked his way up into the second spot by the half way point, but couldn’t get close enough to Beale to make a serious challenge for the top spot. In post race inspection, Ashmore’s car was disqualified for not meeting the chassis height specifications, so Garett Hayman of Milford was awarded second after dropping as far back as sixth at one point, but working his way back toward the front as the laps progressed. Hermon’s Andrew Crosby finished in third with Beal’s wife, Danielle Beale finishing in fourth. Fifth place was not available as only the first four cars were on the lead lap at the finish.
